The Essentials to get started (from StewMac)

Thanks for the responses. I have some basic wood working tools, but nothing specific to guitar/uke building. I guess what I'm asking here, is what tools are hard to pass up from stewmac? (if any). I'll take a look through the books as well. Just didn't know if you all had things you...

The Essentials to get started (from StewMac)

Hi folks, I’m looking to get started on servicing/building guitars and ukes. I recently picked up a couple uke kits here on the forum so I will probably start there. I’m also really interested in practicing inlays (I’m an artist so inlays could be a fun way to create). I searched the forum...

I'm just getting started with this stuff and would love to find a link if anyone has one and isn't going to use it.

Just joined and ordered my first Uke!

Not fully back into the swing of things, but I've been working my way through Matt Stead's Beginner course as my main learning tool. Daniel Ward's Arpeggio Meditations just came in the mail today and I got going on that one tonight. I think I'm really going to like it. Playing the uke since I...

    Sold Stigma Koa Concert

I’ve been talking with him and he’s really nice. I’m going to have a cedar top with mahogany back and sides from him soon.

Just joined and ordered my first Uke!

Quick update (still on vacation and 95% offline) - I was able to borrow a student/school Kala KA-15S and it’s not a bad little instrument. So I’ve continued practicing chord switching and fingerstyle etc a few minutes here and there. I definitely won’t be purchasing my own Soprano anytime...

    UAS is real, let's discuss...

I just wanted to post a quick reply here. I’ve been on vacation, but I intend to fully read everyone’s comments and respond.

I actually reached out to him because those instruments look so nice. I’ve been thinking about a 2nd Uke from my Pono MGTD (as discussed in the thread I started a couple of weeks ago). He had a gorgeous cedar top/mahogany back and sides tenor for sale. That seems like a really nice compliment...

I decided not to bring my uke. Didn’t want to chance having to check it. Will scour local Craigslist for a traveler.

    Hankering for a Tenor

These are great! Thank you. Listened to the tone woods one already and saving the strings one for another day.

yes, lots of little nephews and nieces will be around :ROFLMAO: I have actually been looking on craigslist for just this thing. No luck so far. I'm leaving in about 8 hours and I still haven't decided if I'm bringing it.

Thanks for this. Interesting that you don't think another Pono with a different wood would sound different enough. I think my gut would be to go with something like a cedar top or all mahogany for that more mellow sound. I'll definitely figure it out more as I grow into my mango. I thought...

    UAS is real, let's discuss...

Thanks Mike, I'm just getting a discussion started. At the end of the day, I will make my own decision, just like I did with my Pono Mango and I'm sure I could play it basically forever and never need another ukulele. My dream is to play and have fun, with my kids too. That requires having...

Yes, I agree on going used. That's why I wanted to get this thread going. That way I can continue learning, but keep my eye on the marketplace as time goes on. That's a fun little nugget about improvisation is easier for you with the low G. I'm sure I'll try it at some point, thanks! That...

Thanks for sharing. This is of course an option. I have a friend who makes instruments and I was a carpenter in a previous life. If I really get obsessed it maybe be something I take a crack at myself. I'm really not as picky about having the "best" stuff as I used to. The past 5 years...

Oh yeah, for sure. I've been up and down the list on their site. Was looking for the more "personal" recommendations and also the types of playing you might enjoy on Mahogany? I've been playing a Taylor guitar with a Cedar top, but I can't remember the side woods (I think it's koa on back...

Happy to consider a concert. Originally, that's what I thought I would like. I played a few locally (Kala's) and they were ok, but I wasn't super impressed with the sound. Also, the shops where I am don't do setups so... I also played a Breedlove Concert in Myrtlewood which was a cool color...
