seasonistas play other instruments

Here's an old vid of me on guitar and my friend Gretchen on banjo uke. I seldom play my beloved Gibson guitar anymore since I've been uking in the Seasons. Only so much time in the day...

Well, I play piano and guitar...but both have been ignored since I started playing the uke. It is what is it. I don't have any videos playing piano or guitar, yet. But I have seen videos floating around on YouTube of my high school marching band's performance when we won State in 1993. You can't see me up close, but I'm in there playing the trombone. If anyone is interested in seeing a good marching band, I'm sure I could find the link and post it, here. Just let me know...

Our dad was a very skillful cellist. Ivan (the T) has dad's cello and does play (although very reluctantly).
I love this song and pressured him into giving it a go when we got together for mum's birthday last year.

I wrote this song on the same occasion as the previously posted cello vid with Ivan's cello playing in mind. We actually performed an instrumental (cello and bari uke) version at mum's party and it went down real well. Cha and pa played a couple of songs too.
I did this version as my first recording of my (newly purchased) chromatic harmonica playing.

This thread is great! I just bought a guitar (guitalele ... I am selling my big guitar), but of course I am too busy uking to ever pick it up. But, hey, if I get to make video for you all ... that might just get me to play it. After I finish the 17 Seasons videos I'm already working on .....

I've just ordered a low D whistle and am waiting for the email telling me it's on its way.

Never mind the email the whistle arrived this lunch time so I spent a chunk of this evening getting used to it playing through some of my favourite slow airs. I'll make a vid with it sometime soon.

Oh! and I forgot to add that I have an electronic keyboard which I occasionally use. More recently for the built in accompaniments which are not too bad and certainly useable.

My Cartoon Punk Band from my guitar days

..So, about 8 or so years ago when I was still teaching, I collaborated with the art teacher in my school and we created a Flash Cartoon website. It was about a group of wacky kids in elementary school. The art teacher did all of the art work, we both animated for the site, and I provided all of the voices and music and writing. Since I have always been way too self conscious to perform anything publicly, I got to live out my dream of being in a punk band through this website. I had one of the kids be a poser punk rocker with his own band in this school. They were called the Time Out Kids. He faked a Brit accent even though he was from Cleveland. Anyway, we made some silly cartoons and there was to be a song featured in each episode. I wrote way more content than we ever finished, but after I wrote the 1st song thru this character, I couldn't stop and I wrote like 12 songs in a week. No videos, but if you wanna have a listen, here they are:

Keep in mind they are from the perspective of an elementary school boy.

Ashoken Farewell sounds really great on the Cello, Brian. I reckon it would work on your chromatic harp too. I played a chromatic for a time but didn't bother it getting it fixed when the reeds blew out. I prefer the basic 10 hole vampers.

My Lament for Ukey Dave featured concertina, flute and soprano recorder

Uke4ia Jim, AlanDP? Bassoon jam? :)

Nope! Haven't touched one in 33 years, and never owned one. Just borrowed it from the school.

I doubt if I'll ever use anything that has more than 4 strings. I can see myself trying a tenor guitar sometime since I could still use the same chord "shapes." I still have some recordings of stuff I did on keyboards back when I had some working synthesizers if anyone really wants to hear that kind of thing.

Great idea BEVO!
Here's one I did on the electric guitar.
Also:
Some of you mentioned that it can be tricky to go back and forth between the uke and the guitar. I recently got a 3/4 size guitar.( Not the one in the video.) It really helps to smooth the transition and is an absolute blast to play!
cheese

I do not ,never will, play like an nth as good as most geetarists and never ever ever will play a googleplexionth as well as BB King .....as far as I know he never played this ,but I thought of him as I played this today and tried a little BB feel here and there......RIP Riley ....

Edited and moved due to reloading because of sound issues.

This is an awesome thread Lynda. Can't wait to see what everyone plays. Gonna be great...
thanks! i can't believe how many super vids people have brought and it's only day 1!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've just ordered a low D whistle
i hope you'll bring a vid of it to the thread, i wanted this to be somewhere people who are exploding with the thrill of a new instrument purchase, can come and share with seasons pals, even if the purchase is not a uke

I'm sure I can rustle something up for ya.
you rustled up something WONDERFUL! thank you!

I would love to hear you blow some wind Geoff :biglaugh:

Oh you know what I mean. I don't think this thread should stop at stringed instruments. Do you BEV?
lol! yes indeed, this thread is for any instrument, keyboards, cowbells... you got it, you bring it!

This is a good thread, Lynda.
thanks ginny! i know there are other places to go with vids of other instruments, but it's not the same as sharing with seasonista pals...

YES PLEASE!

wow - guys - what wonderful vids you've brought today! love love love them all!

what a great idea this thread is!!!!! ;)

Here you go, BEV. This show took a ton of hard work and dedication for high school kids. Lots of pressure on us. Our nerves almost got the better of us, as this was not our best performances. The trumpet solo during the first song was suppose to be a duet...but this worked out. We won the State Championship that day. We earned it. The stadium looks empty, behind us, because that is where the bands would sit after they played. It filled in as the day went.

The only spot where you will see the camera on me is at 7:47-7:48. I'm the smallest one towards the far left, with a trombone. I could probably still go out there and march this whole program. We all probably could. But I'm out of shape now, and would probably pass out.

Oh, and the stadium we are performing in is the Hoosier Dome (also called RCA Dome) in downtown Indianapolis. It was demolished when they built the new Lucas Oil Stadium.

Also, if you would like to learn more about this band, you can do so here, in the Performing Arts section http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben_Davis_High_School

I have no idea who posted this video on YouTube. It's not mine. It's labeled Class A, but that is inaccurate. It's Class 5A. I almost commented that, but didn't want the person who posted the video to think I was critical. Don't want them to delete it!

I've got a tiple Columbiano I've played for the Seasons before. I mean, it's like a uke, just larger . . . and with 12 metal strings . . .

I've started getting into fifths-tuning instruments, though. I have a tenor uke in re-entrant mandola tuning, and a baritone uke in Eddie Freeman re-entrant octave mandolin tuning. I have a vid of each of those, but I won't spam the thread.

Most recently, I got a 17-fret tenor banjo, which I have in CGDA linear fifths tuning, using classical (wound and fluorocarbon, not metal) strings. Don't have anything recorded with that yet.

That's really cool. Our marching band was never good enough to go anywhere.

This is a cool thread Birdseye. It's interesting to see what other instruments we all play. It's funny - I haven't touched my guitars since I picked up my 1st uke.

Appalachian dulcimer. (Shaggy - filipinouker -is amazing mountain dulcimer player, I'll see if I can contact her...)
