I have the opportunity to buy a Sonny D super concert demo uke from someone in the Bay Area who knows Sonny through their work with the Hayward uke festival. I've heard about Sonny D but am not too familiar.

Two choices:

1 (first two pics). All Australian Queensland Silkwood. I'm not familiar with this wood..

2 (second two pics). Top is Olivewood, back and sides are black limba. I'm not familiar with these woods either.

Any comments?

"On sale" at $350 each. Do you think this is a good deal? Seems like a very low price for a luthier Hawaiian made uke. Oh and if you are the person I'm talking to you can't vote! :)

Thanks

Sonny D's ukes are great! I don't see how you could go wrong.

You will find some of Sonny's instruments to be fantastic.
I would not buy one sight unseen.

I'm going to check them out Monday or Tuesday.

If anyone knows about these woods I'd love feedback. Seems they might need more rigorous humidification? I'm in the SF Bay Area so that hasn't been a huge concern for me so far. Only my Pono is on a case.

Olivewood and black limba Ohta San super concert pics

image.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgHe sent me pics of the one he's recommending from a playability standpoint. Was played at an ukulele festival, I think N Ca, by someone Ohta San sponsors named Rogie. I don't know who that is but there are YouTube videos of him.
I will try this one and another Tuesday. It has been played so it's a demo. It really seems like a steel of a deal. I hope it plays as good as it looks.
By the way, the proceeds are all going to Sonny who has big medical bills for his wife as I understand. There are about 20 ukes available if you are looking for a real Hawaiian ukulele.
