Season 210 - For The Kids

A new original.

Sweet Sleepy Eyes

Sometimes you stumble
Sometimes you fall
Sometimes you run and
Sometimes you crawl
Sometimes the answers
Aren't plain to see
I'll help you find them
Walk along with me

And I'll be there to hold your hand
When you need some help to stand
I'll cheer you on when you learn how to fly
I know you want to stay up and play
But it's been a long hard day
So for now close your sweet sleepy eyes

Sometimes you wonder
When the sun will shine
Sometimes you blunder
But it'll work out fine
You'll find the right road
Marked by mistakes
They'll help you find
The right path to take

And I'll be there to hold your hand
When you need some help to stand
I'll cheer you on when you learn how to fly
Now you're trying to find your way
But it's been a long hard day
So for now close your sweet sleepy eyes

I can't believe how time has flown
How beautiful you have grown
How you have learned to stand your ground
When uncertainty is all around but
Don't forget that I'm still here for you

And I'll be there to hold your hand
When you need some help to stand
I'll cheer you on when you learn how to fly
You're still trying to find your way
But it's been a long hard day
So for now close your sweet sleepy eyes

Just for now close your sweet sleepy eyes

A challenge to myself here with more finger scrunching and bum note avoiding on these slippery 'lil sopraninos (the smallest uke seemed apt for the season).......a shortened bash at the Ballad Of Davy Crockett for adventure lovin kids............

Chords and Lyrics over at Dr. Ukes

We took a 5 minute break from practicing a song to record this...

was this song written for kids? mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm nah probs not!

was this song insanely popular WITH kids, with us all enthusiastically shouty-singing the "teacher LEAVE THEM KIDS ALONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" chorus? you betcha!!!!!!

it may not be what you're looking for this week, randy!

feel free to say "no thanks and IT'S NOT EVEN GRAMMATICALLY CORRECT "

;)

but i just HAD to bring it!

Just popping in to say this is the BEST thing I've seen and heard on a uke in quite a while. Love, love love it!!!

I keep my soprano uke at the office. It's nice to have it there to fill the time when there's nothing to do, but I also use it on the job. I'm an English as a Second Language teacher here in Myanmar, and a uke song comes in handy on occasion to illustrate a grammar or vocab point. This song? Well...it's useful in teaching the English words for the noises animals make. As for kids, what kind of song do kids love most? Singalongs! My class sang along.

The song was written by my ukulele mentor and inspiration, Doctor Sparkles. His version is "Dinosaurs and Christians"... not chickens. I've found that to be a bit too contraversial on most occasions. This is a great song to use in any situation where you're playing in front of a crowd and want to get them involved. I don't need to post the lyrics, but I should note that there's normally a verse which opens with "Now whistle it!"...It just so happens that 98% of Myanmar people never learned to whistle, so I skipped that one.

The chords are:
C G7
G7 C
C C7 F F7
C G7 C

I'm probably gonna post a bunch of last minute entries, here! I'm a children's librarian, so kids' songs are one of the best parts of my daily job. :)

Here's one of my allllll time favorites, Skinnamarink! It's the one I use to close a lot of my storytime programs, because it's how I feel about my library kiddos. :D

Oh, and forgot to add, I played this one with my favorite, favoritest partner-in-crime DeepWater! He's the best.

“Coon Named Scrounge”

Code:
A song written by Jim Croce. 1973
Parody of “Leroy Brown”
              F
On the south side of the Forest
                G7
Lives the baddest raccoon around
        A7 Bb
And if you go down there you just better beware
        C7 F C7
Of a coon who’s name is Scrounge
          F
Now, Scrounge he’s so onry, you see,
      G7
He stands about 3 foot tall
             A7 Bb
All the mamas call him the “Midnight Bandit”,
             C7 F C7
All the dads just call him “Cur!”

CHORUS
                    F
Well he’s a bad, bad coon named Scrounge,
G7
Baddest coon in the whole darned town
        A7 Bb
He’s badder than a wolverine,
                               C7 F C7
Meaner than the monsters in your dreams

         F
Now Scrounge, he’s a rambler,
             G7
And he likes your garbage can
              A7 Bb
And he likes to behave like a bratty child
               C7 F C7
Chewin’ holes in the attic fan
               F
Well, he wears a phantom mask,
               G7
He’s got stripes like a lemur too
         A7 Bb
He’s only just begun to make a mess here son,
                    C7 F C7
He just put poo poo in your shoe!

CHORUS
         F
Well Friday, “bout a week ago,
                      G7
He sniffed a scent that did entice,
                A7 Bb
He went into the tent of a girl named Doris,
        C7 F C7
And, oooh, that girl smelled nice!
                F
Well, he crawled into her lap,
                 G7
Then she pet him like a cat,
              A7 Bb
But, ol’ Scrounge learned his lesson ‘bout messin’
                          C7 F C7
Around with a tent full of girls like that.

CHORUS
          F
Well, all the young girls were frightened,
                     G7
When they saw it weren’t a kitty cat
                 A7
Oh, they shrieked so loud,
                          Bb
And then they all passed out
                  C7 F C7
And they squashed that raccoon flat.

                         F
Well he was a bad, bad coon named Scrounge,
G7
Baddest coon in the whole darned town
              A7 Bb
He was badder than a wolverine,
                                C7 F
Meaner than the monsters in your dreams

              A7 Bb
He was badder than a wolverine,
                                C7 F Bb F
Meaner than the monsters in your dreams

I recorded a few songs right after some of my storytimes this week... you can kinda tell I had been "shaking my sillies out" for a couple of hours, hahaha

This one is a great counting backwards song, called "Five Green Speckled Frogs." Kids love yelling, "GLUB GLUB" at the end of each verse!

I hope this video finally stabilizes. It's not blurry on the iphone.

“I’d Like to Visit the Moon”
Code:
              G C G
Well I'd like to visit the moon,
       C D G
on a rocket ship high in the air.
                        C G
Yes, I'd like to visit the moon,
         C D G
but I don't think I'd like to live there.

                   C G
Though, I'd like to look down at the earth from above,
            C G
I would miss all the places and people I love
       C G Am
so although I might like it for one afternoon
                      D G
I don't wanna live on the moon.

                 G C G
I'd like to travel under sea,
            C D G
I could meet all the fish everywhere
                        C G
Yes, I'd travel under the sea,
         C D G
But I don't think I'd like to live there.
C G
I might stay for a day there if I had my wish
C G
but there's not much to do when your friends are all fish,
           C G Am
and an oyster and clam aren't real family,
       C D G
so I don't wanna live in the sea.

                 C G C G
I'd like to visit the jungle, hear the lions roar,
C G C G
go back in time and meet a dinosaur,
             C G Am
there's so many strange places I'd like to be,
                            D G
but none of them permanently.

        G C G
So if I should visit the moon,
            C D G
well i'll dance on a moonbeam and then,
        G C G C D G
I will make a wish on a star and I'll wish I was home once again.

                   C G
Though, I'd like to look down at the earth from above,
            C G
I would miss all the places and people I love
       C G
So although I may go,
           Am
I'll be coming home soon
             Am D G
Cause I don't want to live on the moon
        C D G
No I don't want to live on the moon.

 Tacit C E7
On the uke again just can't wait to play my uke again

What I love is making music with my friends

On the uke again we’re a band of players jamming on it our way
                 F C

"The Goat"

(intro: F, G7,C X2)
Code:
               C F
I bought a goat, his name was Jim
                  G7 C
I bought him for, his precious skin
                   C F
That goat got loose, about half past nine
             G7 C
Ate a red shirt, right off the line
                            C F
Well, I grabbed that goat, by the wool of the back

                  G7 C
And tied him to, the railroad track
                     C F
He bucked and bawled, with might and main
                       G7 C
When round the curve, came a passenger train
                     C F
He bucked and bawled, with might and main
                        G7 pause/slow down C
Coughed up that shirt, and flagged the train.
(outro: Csus4 , C)

Here's another counting backwards from five song- "Five Little Ducks!"
I occasionally have some kids get nervous near the end of the song (and, one of my adult friends is always distressed when he hears me play this too, ha), so when I get to the slow part, I'll usually throw in, "don't worry- I promise a happy ending!"

https://youtu.be/vJ3yOmco_14

I just can't stop counting! Counting is awesome! So, let's count some ladybugs!

This is "Ladybugs' Picnic," which I first learned from Sesame Street in the early 70's. I still love this song. It was written by Bud Luckey and Donald Hadley. I think Sesame Street songs are some of the best songs ever written!

https://youtu.be/PNHKN5_Ujh4

Okay, here's the last one I zoomed through after storytimes! :)
This is "Old MacDonald Had a Farm"... you may have heard of this one. ;)
When I play this, I love to have the kids pick all of the animals in the song. That can lead to some creative sounds on the fly. Like... octopus. We totally did that one recently.

https://youtu.be/ts2Rb6Vir_0

This may seem like a strange song to put in the "children's songs" category, but if you stick around for my brief commentary after the song, I explain why I think of it this way.
