Season 248 - Protest Songs

When I was learning to play solos last year I covered "The Hanging Tree" from The Hunger Games. While this version is instrumental, the lyrics are in the vein of a protest song.

Posting my bonus song first so that I can put up a really good new song later. ;)

I'm doing another motorcycle rode trip around Myanmar at the moment, and I didn't bring my uke with me. So I can't do a main entry at the moment. I'll follow Demi's lead and post my bonus song first.

Greetings,

This is something different, inspired by recent "friendly" protests my son in Rutgers witnessed over the weekend. Although the stabbing I refer to is from another incident last week, my musical selection was driven by college or school protests. Thus I chose the Boomtown Rats song of " I Don't Like Mondays" which is based on a true story.

Ciao,
Gina

This was first recorded in 1941 by the Almanac Singers: Millard Lampell, Lee Hays, Pete Seeger, and Woody Guthrie.

Here's another Leonard Cohen song, There Is a War, that fits this week's theme...

Strange Fruit

I was watching 'The Help' last night, and this one came to mind. Some finger-mangling chords!

Here a bonus entry. From Chuck Brodsky and could also belong to librainian's season before (but no time).
As my other song before more a soft protest song.

Hot off the presses. Let me know whatcha think about this new original.

After the depressing news of last Tuesdays events I fell into a Malaise. I snapped out of it yesterday and caught up with my vid backlog. I finished this one about 2.30 AM and post it here as a bonus. I find that Iam not the onlyone! Bonus Song

I've been toying with a "Taboo Subjects: Religion and Politics" theme for a while, this is even more satisfying.

Doug, that's a heck of a uke, and a perfect theme, this song has been banging around in my head for several days, for obvious reasons..The Minutemen are among my early life-changing musical discoveries. This is from their 1980 EP "Paranoid Time" The chords I'm playing have very little to do with the original scathing bass riff

Here's a little background on old Joe and his ghost..
and here's me trying to sound righteous - man that felt good.
I guess this is an entry..

Shoulda been on the Trumbo Soundtrack.
HUAC Sucked!!!

Here's an original. I wrote it from kind of a pinhead's perspective. I hope it's a bit cathartic for me, I need it.

Read the article and it was interesting that the link between Joe and Donald was Mr Cohn
The article made mention of a movie called Point of Order and I found it on YT. It centres
on the case of Private Shine.

thank you for the week Doug.
you are inspiring us to write.
here is another original song.

I'm worried, I'm uneasy
I'm harassed, I'm perplexed
I've got a mill stone round my neck
I'm anxious, I'm vexed
Cause either way I turn
There aint no choice that I'd choose

I'm apprehensive, I'm afraid
At my situation
At this burden on my back
Weighs me down with consternation
And the prospect of tomorrow
Just leaves me confused

We've got sin, we've got lust
We've got anger and greed
We got violence in the house
And drugs on the streets
And politicians making promises
Everyone knows they can't keep

You turn on the television
Just to watch people die
And watch another dictator
Steal and cheat and lie
And see everyone oppressed
Stand by as all the good men fall

The writing's on the wall
Cause the earth's burning up
There's a hole in the sky
And everybody's laying blame
But no-one's asking why
We're in the mess that we're in
Cause we love ourselves like we do

But who by worry adds an hour to his life?
When everywhere you turn
There's war and there's strife
You gotta keep on walking
That's the plight of the worried man

An old man lays dying
The baby's in the cradle
For his children's children's children
Just scraps on the table
You can't turn back time
Once you've lit that fuse

Oh, and we've all had a hand
In striking that flame
And I fear for this world
Where's it gonna end?
Oh, who can break the seal?
Who's gonna pay all our dues?
Who's gonna bring the good news?

But who by worry adds an hour to his life?
When everywhere you turn
There's war and there's strife
You gotta keep on walking
That's the plight of the worried man

God dresses the flowers
Feeds the birds in the air
Well he wraps them all up
In his love and care
But sometimes you gotta wonder
Has the earth slipped out of his view?
That's the plight of the worried man

Who by worry adds an hour to his life?
When everywhere you turn
There's war and there's strife
You gotta keep on walking
That's the plight of the worried man
The plight of the worried man
