eeeeeeuuuwww, yuk!Yes, very similar. But, these guys looked like they rolled in the dirt for a couple days, had the stereo typical white man dreads, smelled like bong water, and were wiping cigarette ashes on their pants legs - I guess that is a new thing as well.

My goodness man. Book the next flight to Roanoke Regional Airport. I will guide you in an exploration of the roots of these people. They are simply the modern Appalachian-Americans, though yours may be slightly misplaced to the left.
Basically any "hippy" we have fits this description. It's not really a trend here. It's just the way they/we are. This seems to be the case West of Richmond Virginia extending towards the southwest into North Carolina and Tennessee. Basically the Appalachian Trail corridor.
Arguably I'm sure it exists to some extent in West Virginia but we don't think much of them folk.
The overalls sound a bit over the top though. Most of ours where just any old thing from the Goodwill store. I suspect that some of yours are working on developing an image.
I have seen the overalls mix in certain venues (again see Old Crow Medicine Show http://www.crowmedicine.com/) but really there are just farm people mixing with hippy people.
Floyd, VA is a great little town for this sort of thing. Also Floydfest is a tremendous venue for experiencing it. http://atwproductions.com/index.php?pr=ffhome

and the Galax Fiddler's Convention http://www.oldfiddlersconvention.com/default.htm
Let me know when you are coming in so I can clean out the back of the truck so you have somewhere to sit.
Sorry, I wasn't putting down a demographic region of the USA by any means. I just think it's funny to see what rich white kids do to "stand out". I didn't take it any different then the whole Emo, Gangsta, or Grung fad. I just thought it was funny when I was told it was Hillbilly Hippie.
I don't see how these two mix together in anyway.
