Hi all!
I'm looking for info on ukulele building, and I'm pretty curious how you people got started.
Do you have any resources or tips you could share?
I've never really dabbled in wood works so I'm mainly asking out of curiosity.

Grab a cup of coffee and a comfy chair and read the stuff in this forum. (luthiers lounge)

Then, start looking at you tube.

There is a mountain of information out there..

The techniques (tools, jigs and moulds) used in classical guitar making are similar to those used in making a uke. There's more info in books and on Youtube on classical guitar making than uke making, so invest some time in both these areas and see the many different ways it can be done.

You say you have never dabbled in woodwork: maybe its a bit ambitious therefore to attempt to make a uke. Someone who could help you learn to use tools and work with wood would be an asset.

If after you've gained some appreciation of whats involved, and wish to proceed, then you should consider whether to start with a cigar box uke or a conventional uke kit, maybe find a night school class or a build from scratch.......

You don't need to spend lots on tools or equipment. You do however have to accept that the first few ukes you make are likely to be below par and should be seen as part of the learning process.

Aside from this forum and the wealth of info on the web, here are uke building books to start with:

The "Uke Book" by Sarah Greenbaum (artist) and John Weissenrieder (luthier) will be published very shortly.

This is one of the most thoroughly documented build threads for a Stew-Mac tenor kit. Great way to start is a kit.

Just saw that "Heidi Litke (fomerly of Bean Sprout Banjo Ukulele Co.) and Robbie O'Brien have just completed filming an online ukulele building course due to be released in the fall of 2017. It can be found at www.obrienguitars.com/courses/. She is also presently working on detailed ukulelel plans and an instructional book. "
