Trying to understand how to save repeating sections when writing sheet music I wondered if anyone could point me to a place that explains these in depth? Dozens of Google searches dont go into enough explanation.
For instance will using DS al coda, and al with the al sign achieve the same as using the |: ........ :| with a repeat 1, 2 & 3?

Typically, repeats would be used for multiple verses where the music is the same. A DS might be used if a song is an ABA form where the first and last sections are the same. It allows you to jump back to the same music and saves you from having to write it out. Maybe this link will help illuminate:

That link was the best I could find!
Is there a way to mark a section, call it “Sec 1” and then call for its insertion at various points?
I am particularly looking at some etudes by Carulli where a chunk gets repeated at various points. Bit of a serverside inclusion in coding!

I get what you are trying to say, but I don't think it works that way.
Typically, The repeat signs at measures with the dots bracket complete sections of the song that repeat.
The Coda and the D.S. are used where there are variances, usually at either the bridge or ending of a song.
If I understand you correctly, you are looking for a symbol or notation where you can "call" to a section of the music, and then return back to someplace else.
I often do that for the Chorus - write it out once, then just put "Chorus" in the sheet for the next however many repeat appearances.
I sometimes do this myself when I am making song sheets, to condense them down to a single page.
but I will often just write out everything that repeats, even if there are duplicates inline, for clarity, and then use the coda for the end.
Which is pretty much standard notation.
I guess they were really on to something back in the day, eh?

Cheers!

I have seen parts where you have to jump back and forth, sometimes multiple DS or Codas. Sometimes the Strauss waltzes have something like this. When writing something out it is important to make it as clear as possible for the player. IF you are the only person who will be reading it, it is no problem as you know what you want. If you are sharing parts with others it can be an issue if the "road map" is unclear.

My advice is to make it as clear as possible, even if you have to write out the repeated part and add a second page.
