Kala Drawing to Give Away Ukuleles Schools in the US

I think that it’s great that Kala are both able and want to help schools in that way.

Of course there are a lot of factors for them to consider and they have a business model to make work for them too. I play and love Kala products, but what’s a bit saddening to me is that I don’t hear of such a similar supportive stance from Kala in the U.K. - it could be there, but if so I’ve not heard of it. That’s not ment to be a negative comment in any way but rather one of encouragement (if needed) to Kala to remember other schools and other places where they sell their Ukes too.

To be fair, Ukulele programs in schools in the United States are still a rather recent development and often are the result of an individual teacher’s efforts versus any type of larger movement. Yes—Doane started his work in the 60s, but that was in Canada. When I went through my undergrad (early 90s), elementary music methods included guitar, recorder, and drumming. The ukulele wasn’t even discussed.

Kala [and the other brands] has [have] a huge market for ukulele in the education programs in the United States (I have sent applications to them twice in hopes of becoming an education specialist) that is wide open. My belief is that kids who learn ukulele at school will want one at home, and they’ll often want what they use at school—and what the teacher recommends. Kala used to donate Waterman models (we have 40 that were gifted by Kala in 2016)...nice to see the KA-15 models this time around.

Thanks for that. Interesting. If they get kids started with Kala, they will tend to stay with Kala, and they certainly have lots of model available. I have the Waterman and a slotted headstock cedar tenor.

" The Kala KA-15S is the most popular ukulele in the world..."

Thanks for posting this. The Hillsborough County school system is interested, so I sent the link to their contact.

Have the schools been announced? I showed this to our music teacher and he applied.
