Welcome to Season 324 in which we celebrate the nuclear apocalypse!
Well, not really. But sort of. It's another geeky season, this time enjoying the music of the Fallout video game series. It's been running for about 20 years, and is set in an alternate timeline where culture basically freezes in the 1950s in favour of a mad focus on scientific advancement. 100 years later, natural resources dry up, leading to a war between the US and China which culminates in nuclear holocaust in 2077. Humanity survives in underground shelters called 'vaults', run by a company which actually uses the to conduct various social experiments.
The game's take place around 200 years after the war, where civilisation has rebuilt itself to a point, but it's a fairly anarchic world . You explore the world as a relative newcomer, playing out a story that ultimately changes the region the games take place in. Soundtracking these adventures are various radio stations playing music from the 30s to the early 60s. These songs are either really on the nose, like the one in my intro vid, others portray an innocence and optimism that gives a striking juxtaposition to the wasteland around you. All while you explore the human condition. From old standards to hidden gems, jazz to rock and roll, Bing Crosby to Dion, it's a varied and very satisfying playlist. In the latest game there's a character played by Lynda Carter of Wonder Woman fame, who wrote and performed some songs especially for the soundtrack.
I want you to play me a song from any of these radio station. They're mainly short and repetitive, so there is plenty of room for you to put your own stamp on it. It's jazz, blues and rocknroll so gratuitous solos are greatly appreciated.
If you can't find a song you like, either play me an original with a dystopian theme or cover 99 Luftballons in the style of one of the artists who feature in Fallout.
