::Leader Board:: Ahnko Honu Takes The Lead Chapter 23!

I took Shirley to the eye Dr. this morning. She has a tear in the retina in her right eye. Specialist appointment at 1:45.

To be continued.

James isn't supposed to be physically active for 4-6 weeks and the first thing out of his mouth when dropping him off this morning is "I think we're playing basketball in PE. I can't wait!"

::sigh::

Had to remind him he can't run around. And then I emailed his PE teacher to remind him that James can't participate.

Where I grew up, lunch was the noontime meal, and the evening meal was dinner or supper, which were interchangeable terms....

Sunday meal after church was dinner, then we had supper in the evening (often pancakes while we watched Wild Kingdom or the Wonderful World of Disney).

I imagine my trials and tribulations get tiresome after a while. I'm sorry. Sometimes it's just hard to think of anything else....

Your trials and tribulations absolutely DO NOT get tiresome. I want to hear them regularly, please.

We're still working on our Thanksgiving leftovers, and loving every bite of it. My appetite has returned to normal, and none too soon. It would have been a shame not to be able to eat at Thanksgiving....

My cold on Thanksgiving didn't hurt my appetite, fortunately! Since we rarely host Thanksgiving we rarely have leftovers (except pie. We supply the pie. We always have lots of pie). We were going to cook a turkey on Saturday, but I was feeling so crappy that we put it off for a week or two. Purpose will be to enjoy the meal again and then have plenty of leftovers with enough turkey to make pot pies, too.

I made a smoked turkey sandwich with dressing, gravy, cranberry sauce, red onion, lettuce, cracked pepper on toasted ciabatta and it was amazing.

OH YUM. As long as the cracked pepper was kept to a minimum.

There used to be a restaurant here in our "town center" in the apartment complex. Several people ran it over the years, but apparently nobody could make it work. There are too few people here through the summer to support it. The place has been closed for three years, now.

Recently a group of residents got permission from the board of directors to open the place as a cafe. Coffee, donuts, and the like in the morning, and lunches, cakes, pies and ice cream in the afternoon.

The whole operation will be non-profit, and run by resident volunteers. The response from the community has been amazing. Over the past couple of months they have come together to clean up and decorate the place, which had been in awful condition. The last operator had just turned off the stoves and fryers and locked the doors and walked away. The fryers had three year old used grease in them!

The place is now spotlessly clean, bright, warm and inviting. Everything has been cleaned and painted, the floors refinished, curtains hung, anything to make the place nice.

The board of directors was so impressed by the effort and the results that they essentially gave us a blank check to get whatever we needed to make it happen; five new ceiling fans, new light fixtures, some professional plumbing and electrical work, and who knows what else.

Today is the grand opening at 12:30. You get coffee, soda, tea or water and a dessert (cake or pie) for $5. I think that's a great deal, especially since the drinks have free refills.

I'm expecting lots of community support. I imagine the volunteers will have trouble keeping up with the crowds....

This sounds like so much fun! I would spend all my time there cooking, I bet!

Nothing formal about either meal. What some call lunch we call dinner. Lunch is a posh word. And it can be anything. Our meals go breakfast, dinner and tea. Supper is usually a posh person's thing. We might have an evening snack or what have you, but nothing is formal if you're working class.

How funny! Lunch and supper are most definitely NOT posh words over here. Dinner is the most posh term we have for a meal, I think.
