If anyone out there use a power planer to thin soundboard peices, how thin do you go before resorting to sanding? Do you use a backing board? Just looking for some help avoiding destroying nice wood.

Thanks

I use my thickness planer with a backer of 5/8 plastic covered shelving. The backboard stays put and the piece slides over it.If the wood is straight grained I can carefully work it down to 1.5 mm.Once the top side is smoothed I turn it over and plane the back side, sharp blades and very thin cuts are in order. At the first sign of roughness it's time to stop and move to my shop built thicknesser.drum sander 002 (550x413).jpg
If there is any figure to the wood I move to the sander early in the process.
