Hello. This thread made realize I strum/pick way up the neck.. and I mean way up... Sometimes as close as the 5th fret. 
Another thing I noticed is that when my wife plays exact same uke and song. It sounds so much better. Perhaps could it be that it sounds different when you're the audience as opposed being the player?? I look at her strumming hand and she strums really close to the sound hole sometimes close to the bridge which is not the Ukulele way at all! I in turn tried this out.. strumming close to the sound hole and I find the sound more pleasing with more sustain. So now I make an effort to strum and pick close the sound hole. I mainly play solo arrangements, and I find you only need a light touch to give it a booming sound. It feels like I bought a brand new ukulele!! lol
