This season, we’ll celebrate music by songwriters and performers who used “Doc” or “Merle” as their stage names.

Fair game — any songs the artists performed, not only the ones they wrote.

The obvious choices here are Arthel “Doc” Watson and his son Eddy “Merle” Watson, about whom I’ve bloviated (affectionately) many times. Also the great Merle Haggard.

There are other easy picks: Doc Pomus, Doc Cheatham, Merle Travis, Merle Kilgore, etc.

However, NO “Doctors” (Dr. John, Dr. Feelgood) and no “Meryls” (sorry, Meryl Streep).

If you need a ruling from the chair about entering music from a particular artist, PM me or post on the thread.

RULES:

1) Standard start/stop time applies
2) 5-song limit
3) The entry must be new to Season 340 and indicated somewhere on the video or the post
4) Ukulele must be prominent, but multi tracking is fine
5) Collaborations welcome!
Be sure to comment on others’ contributions

Originals: Welcome and should have something to do with the theme, such as — parent/child relationships, the Blue Ridge Mountains (Watsons), Oklahoma or Central California (Haggard), a musician’s life, etc.

PRIZES: Yes! Most likely Doc Watson or Merle Haggard CDs.

Mostly, have fun and enjoy this great music and each other!

AND REMEMBER, Del's Season 339 continues for another 18 hours or so, so please post and comment there!

Can I kick in a song about a non-musician whose literary alter ego was named Doc?

Funny, I was just listening to a Doc Watson song on Youtube, then I decided to check in here and see if the new theme was up. This one is going to be so much fun! Great, great choice for my tastes ~

Nice one Rick.I assume it includes any songs covered by the artists that appears on discographies etc?edit Whoops just listened to your vid and it answers my question.

Thanks! I edited the post to reflect that, too.

this is gonna be a discovery week for me! AND i learnt a new word!
And that’s an awesome new word - new to me too! One of those words that matches its meaning so perfectly.

Bloviate - talk at length, especially in an inflated or empty way.

‘Lugubrious’ is another of my favourites that I would put into the same category.

This theme will be a bit of a challenge for me - but I’ll certainly give it a bash. Thanks for the link to the song lists, Rick - I can see a couple there I might be familiar with. And cheers for hosting - the baton is on its way! ;)

Another one on the early shift. I've gone for one of the other Docs.Doc Severinsen.I kind of knew the name.Bit of research turned up a fine jazz trumpeter and band leader.Johnny Carson show alumni as well.He covered this Burt Bacharach / Hal David classic on a couple of albums.

The Angels are a great Aussie band but they have been through many incarnations. As far as I'm concerned they are only The Angels if Doc Neeson(gone in 2014) is up front.

Before I get into the hard work of songwriting, here’s a cover of a Doc Pomus song.

I’m almost to 80 subscribers! Please subscribe to my new YouTube channel. I’m donating to the Lustgarten Foundation when I hit 100 subscribers.

Good morning Rick, would an original song about drug use be ok ? It probably features in alot of musicians' lives on the road and Merle Haggard's problems are well documented.

Unfortunately, it fits the general idea of the theme. So yes.
