Season 358: The 1930s!

Apologies for the clippy sound quality. I'm tinkering with a new USB interface for recording and it evidently isn't going as well as I'd hoped.

If you're suffering from clipping when recording, try to set the input gain on your DI device lower and just crank it up in production... Hope this helps.

I gave up on the song that was killing me with the chord changes. Someone else already did it much better than I could do anyway. Maybe I'll try it again some other week. Here's one that the Carter Family recorded. By the time they recorded it, it was already nearly 70 years old. I flubbed the ending.

Here's one that was a big hit for Benny Goodman in 1936, and has been a big hit with me for ages.
I first heard it at the end of John Martyn's album "Inside Out".
A simple song about a big truth.
Sorry about the wind noise - I set up in my shed with the camera on a tripod outside in the breeze.
I love playing songs on this uke that might have been played back in it's youth.
Thanks Harry122 for hosting - great to keep these great songs alive.

^ great to see and hear you post again Karl.

thank you Randy for hosting a wonderful week of music.
also, and along with the 20s and early 40s, a favourite era for me.

a song from kevin and i.

Phew. Wasn’t sure I’d manage to get one posted, and I love this era musically so much. Great, great theme Randy, thanks. Short n sweet this.

And another "phew", Randy! Wish there could have been more time because I love Thirties music, too! It's a great theme and perhaps you might be able to bring it back in some shape or form later on. Meanwhile ....

This has been an amazing Season for me. The 1930s was a transformative decade for music, with so many styles emerging and so many timeless songs being created. The entries this week captured all the variety and wonder of this decade. I'm in awe of the talent and enthusiasm included in the Playlist. Wrap-up and shout-outs soon!

Thanks. I bought a pair of headphones yesterday so I can better monitor the sound through my USB interface box. I'm hopeful that will help me get the levels right.

So many wonderful 1930s songs and so many amazing performances. I loved every single entry. Here's a review of all the submissions. Please forgive me if I've missed you!

If you can imagine Robert Johnson playing a house party and trying to get the dance floor going, this might have been one that did it. Similar basic progression for a ton of country blues numbers, including Hot Tuna's "Keep on Truckin'" (and happy 78th birthday, Jorma Kaukonen!)

I wish I were a Seasonista at the time of this thread. I love tunes from this era.
This is a song I love to play and as you mentioned, these changes are very common. Some other tunes that use 'em are:

Bring It On Home - Pink Anderson
Boogie - John Hartford
Can't Tame Wild Women - Bill Boyd & His Cowboy Ramblers
Alice's Restaurant - Arlo Guthrie
How Come You Do Me Like You Do? - Stuff Smith (Stuff didn't write this tune, but that's where I learned it)

An old pop tune that my mom used to sing is called Jada. It has a different bridge, but otherwise the same changes.
