UU Service Unavailable?

Is this some sort of internet hack type thing? Sounds fishy to have that many “guests.”

FYI - where is says "guests" is literally anyone looking at any page on the UU forum who is not actually logged in with a username and password.

Assuming it as suspicious is a giant leap without foundation.

Tons of people "look" at the UU forum, who do not have an account here.

Looking is "free".

The only things that might force someone to make an account and login is either to make a comment (or new thread), or to see UU-uploaded photos, for without logging in, neither is possible.

Photos that are linked/embedded from Photobucket/Flikr/GoogleDrive/imgur/etc... will be visible without having to log in with username and password. This is how the UU forum software works. :)

Right! I need ten characters. Any volunteers? :)

My bad. I'll delete my post.

You did nothing wrong! OMG why delete an innocent idea?

Not everybody knows how web sites work "under the hood", and this is fine. We are all here to help and to learn, no?

RafterGirl - please dont feel bad.

As far as guests, I have spoken to several people about UU that have told me they are afraid to register to sites on the internet. They think that if they do they are giving the site permission to see something or do something that they can't define, but are fearful of anyway. Just paranoia, so they satisfy themselves by looking in from the outside. And let's face it, most of the things we discuss on UU are pretty much covered multiple times over. If one has a question about strings, straps, or setups, one would not have to ask it to find the answer. So I think there might be a lot more of those people out there then we think.

No problem. It was just one of those ideas that popped into my head that I should have given more thought to before posting. I was seeing "goblins."

I guess I never thought about how many visitors there are to forums that just cruise through and never register or engage in conversations. I enjoy the exchange of information & interaction with other members on the forums I belong to. I learn stuff, and I pass on stuff that I learn. Not everyone's thing though. Perhaps the traffic jam lately was people researching Christmas gift ideas?

And this continues to be a common message when I visit this site
Service Unavailable
The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later.

Additionally, a 503 Service Unavailable error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Apache/2.4.29 (Unix) mod_hive/6.6 OpenSSL/1.0.1e-fips mod_fastcgi/2.4.6 Server at forum.ukuleleunderground.com Port 443

I think we are all getting the same message. Unfortunately no one appears to care much.

I have tried a number of times to contact the mods but there is no response. Why would they not respond?

Maybe because there are fewer active mods than there used to be.

Maybe because some of us have our own s*** to deal with as well as the problems caused by hackers and spammers (which account for a large number of the issues seen).

Maybe because this forum is provided free of charge and run by half a handful of volunteers rather than full-time employees, and those volunteers find some of their time taken up with real world jobs meaning that they struggle to keep up.

Etc etc etc.

We know things are creaking a bit. As some members have guessed, we're looking at the problems. Improvements and changes to the forum are being explored.

As some of the more patient members have observed, a couple of retries or refreshes often gets past the glitches. I've posted in other threads with a list of other measures that may help temporarily. It's very late in the UK so I'm not inclined to hunt that down and repost it now. I'll do it tomorrow.

Shouting with big fonts and capitals really doesn't help anything but your egos.

Have a good night/day (delete according to geographical relevance) and a Happy new year. We apologise for the inconvenience and will do what we can.

Maybe you could take a look "under the hood" here at UU Joe! We don't seem to firing on all cylinders these days! :D

Thanks for the vote of confidence, but I do not have access to such things on this forum. Only the moderators and administrators can do such things as that.

I have worked in web design for many years, and during that time learned a lot from others about how my work would be integrated into the overall "system" later on. I know that any web site you might visit has many layers of software, built on top of whatever hardware or virtualization setup, and that sometimes there are a few people involved in the maintenance of keeping a web site going, and not always a single entity, or single point of contact.

Having said all the above, I know little about what goes on specifically for the UU forum in order to keep it running.

Apologies for the tone of my last post. I was tired and thus unnecessarily tetchy there.

There have been a number of issues over the last few months, some of them apparently linked to anti-spam measures. Spammers and hackers have done there very best to cause inconvenience here. Unfortunately, despite the problems, we can't just turn off or significantly reduce the spam filters. Some of you will remember the period when the forums were choked with spam posts. Without the filters the volume would simply be too high for mods to delete manually.

As I mentioned, admin is exploring ways to improve the forum and address the problems, but this will take some time.

Meanwhile, if you do have access issues, a second or third attempt or a refresh or two often gets past the problem. I'd also recommend the following:

* Ensure that the link/bookmark you use to get to the forum starts with https and not just http
* Check the your post text for any words that may trigger spam filters (references to drugs, gambling, casinos, downloads, p*** etc etc etc)
* Check to see if your post contains a link. If it does, and you think that may be causing the problem, try posting the URL as text without linking

These may or may not help - and not all the problems we're seeing are necessarily caused by the anti-spam measures - but for the moment I'm afraid it's all I have.

I'll keep raising the issues with Ryan, but I know he is already aware and is working on the problems.

^^ This. Unfortunately it's an issue with the spam filter. Ryan and the guys are aware of it and working on getting it fixed. Hang tight gang ;)

I’ve found good workaround for including video, picture or sound sample links in a post is to
1) post without links
2) edit in the links on that post

I'll throw in my dos centavos ... Please understand the Forum is just a part of the UU network and there are other areas that require attention. As buddhuu mentioned, Admin is aware of the problem and continuously working to find solutions. Unfortunately, it does take time and manpower. Your patience will be greatly appreciated.
