Default Help with “It’s all in the Movies”

Been trying to figure out the chords to the Merle Haggard version of It’s all in the Movies . Looked at the usual sites that I use and find several suggesting G6 and Dmaj7 however this is just not working ? Another suggested Dmaj7 and Amaj7 , nope !

When I pick the melody along with the tube video( chorus line) It’s all in the Movies , it sounds right if I start 3rd string 1st fret ( C#) . There is also an F# and G# which means to me it’s in the key of A.

But for the life of me I can’t find chords that work. Please help !!!

You're right, Key of A. Pretty much just D and A with an occasional E7 thrown in there. In the recording they're using Dmaj7 and Amaj7. Here's how I would play it:

You can also substitute Bm(4222) for Dmaj7 and it sounds fine and removes the high C# note from the voicing.
