Ukulele News from NAMM 2019

I caught the tail end of some wonderful playing on the mini-guitar at the Romero booth. It was hard to see who it was underneath the hat but I think was Daniel Ho.

I also want to hear about bags and accessories such as Mono, Crossrock, D’Addario, etc.

Hi ghostrdr:

There was not much happening at Mono, Crossrock, and D'Addario booths this year in terms of ukulele related items. Their ukulele displays were skimpy and there was nothing new for 2019. So I didn't bother to take any pictures or videos there.

Luke

Looking forward to seeing your pictures, Mike (I hope you'll post them here).

Meanwhile, here is some more news from NAMM: There is a brand called Uma Ukulele from Taiwan presenting a fan fretted ukulele, where each fret and the bridge are set at a different angle, extending like a fan:

Love these ukes, but from looking at the fret markers, someone needs to visit their cardiologist lol. I actually love the music as heartbeat theme if that's what the fret markers are supposed to be.

This one is not ukulele related, so please excuse me for posting this guitar video. I thought it was great. The guitar player is a guy named Freebo. I had never heard of him before, so I had to look him up on the internet. Apparently he has been performing for over 40 years as a back up musician for famous acts like Bonnie Raitt. The bass player is Alice Howe, an up-and-coming singer/songwriter. Enjoy!

Wow. Thanks for the update! Much more efficient than my refreshing youtube and looking for videos. I thought Mono made a new Ukulele gig bag that was more a sleeve. Maybe that was last year.

I believe is Daniel Ho! See photo below You must used an external mic? It’s great sound quality. Thank you so much for posting
What a great sounding guitar. I think downupdave owns the same one. I will play this song on his guitar tomorrow!

Hi Brenda:

Thanks. No external mic. The sound quality I was getting was a result of several factors working in my favor. The video recorder that I used was an HDR-MV1 Sony recorder that has a wide angle lens. It has CD-quality audio (44 khz 16-bit). Secondly, the sound system used at the Romero booth was a Bose system - great sound coming out of the speaker. Thirdly, I had positioned my camcorder right in front of the speaker.

regards,
Luke

Thanks so much for adding your videos, Luke. They give us all a good impression of what is going on at NAMM.

This video goes through the possibilities of the new Kala Elite models that are made in California. They now add all kinds of inlay work and sunburst finishes, extend their line of super tenors (next to the all Maple model, they now have an Ebony model with a torrefied Spruce top with a satin finish), and most importantly: all Elite models will now have an X bracing instead of fan bracing, which seems to open up the sound, according to them:

This is one of the videos I've been waiting to see. Thanks :)

I wish they would try offering some different soprano models, as well as sopranos with 1.5 nuts.

Glad to see they are going with Worth strings, and using UPT tuners on some models.

Kala has teamed up with Mandy Harvey from America's Got Talent to produce her own design of an entry level ukulele package (UU is probably not the main target group for this sort of bundle, I just accumulate what I find about new models etc.):
