Each of the sides is made up of several pieces. They need to be glued together to form the complete sides for the new ukulele before they can be thinned down. A piece of walnut is glued between these two pieces to give a shadow line. This is purely for aesthetics, to keep the character of the cigar box.
The sides need to be thinned to about 3/16” in order to support the top and back. Most of the thinning occurs on the inside of the piece.
The hardest part lies ahead: Cutting the finger joints. The Torano box does not have them, but a cigar box ukulele doesn’t look right without them.
