Sore Bendable Left Thumb

Another tip is to:
left hand squeeze...strum...release...pause, etc a bit like reggae style.
That way you are putting pressure on your fingers only say 30% of the time, a marked reduction.
 
Six weeks later, my thumb is doing much better thanks to you, Kenn2018, and all the others who added their thoughts/suggestions. Awareness of everything - from posture, to strengthening, to relaxing - has made a difference.

I agree with the others, exercises and warm-ups are required before playing the instrument. I always do warm-ups playing music to make it easier and freer, it protects against injuries and makes it possible to warm up all muscles, even small ones.
