I used a condenser mic into my laptop, just running windows movie maker. Then I pull off the audio and clean it up in audacity. The backing track I developed in Band-In-A-Box. That software is a hassle but it can produce good results.
I tend to use backing tracks with swing and jazz stuff, otherwise the improvised lines don't make much sense.
