Yes I agree - even one of their Elite tenors had a narrow nut too. Madness.
 
They actually made two variants as I recall - the width you have but also a 34mm version.
 
Yes, they also have a "Slim Neck" model with 1 3/8" nut, which is what they probably sent you. What were they thinking? :)

KoAloha have a 37mm nut but only 27mm string spacing same as the Kala. I think the extra width still helps though. The Kala looks very good considering the price.
 
IMO, a narrow string spread defeats the whole purpose of a wider nut, as seen below, compared to a Kala Elite with 38mm and 31mm. If I ever get a Koaloha or Opio tenor, I'd absolutely have a new nut cut with a 30-31mm string spread. YMMV.

I can't figure out why Ko'Aloha did this either. I don't have any playing issues with it, but it goes to show that the string spread is important.
