I made a strap for my Outdoor Ukulele using 550 paracord. I purchased 50 feet of paracord from Dick's Sporting Goods for $4.99 (+ tax)
It is essentially a long paracord bracelet with sliding loop ends to attach to the strap buttons.
A 5 feet long single strand of paracord is used for the core with scaffold knots at the ends to attach it to the strap buttons. The cobra knot pattern is used to wrap the core.
A 36 feet long strand is used for the cobra knot wrap. The cobra knot pattern is used to cover the center 42 inches of the single strand core. The remaining ends of the core are used to make the scaffold knots.
The cobra knot pattern is initially compressed to tightly fit in the center 40 inches of the core and is expanded to 42 inches meet the scaffold knots on the ends. This allows the core to be completely covered and results in a more flexible and comfortable strap.
Tie the scaffold knots and attach them to the strap buttons. It may take a few attempts to get the length correct for your preference. I like my ukulele to hang just a bit lower than it would be without a strap.
When you are satisfied with the length trim any excess paracord and use a lighter to singe the ends. I left a few inches on the back scaffold knot in case I need to adjust it later.
Pull the cobra wrap towards the ends from the center to meet the scaffold knots. Try to evenly distribute the cobra knot pattern. Trim the ends of the last cobra knot and use a lighter to singe and seal (press) the ends.
Enjoy your new ukulele strap!
