I had about forgotten about this one. This came out in the late
1970's and was boycotted by different organizations so it
barely got any air time. Great guitar , turn up your volume
for this one.

I first heard this song by David Ray on the Blues, Rags & Hollers album during the sixties folk boom. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xgL0mM2qPGY

The liner notes caused me to look up Lead Belly's version, recorded in 1939, that was Ram Jam's source for the song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJUSGuNxt-4 Here, as he often did, he blends it with some other songs.

I assumed for a few years that Lead Belly was the composer, until I head it done on a recording made by John & Alan Lomax sung by a group of prisoners on a chain gang, led by a prisoner named James "Iron Head" Baker. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4XFXJSQQOI

Sheryl Crowe does one of my favourite versions. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kum4O_fh0_E

I really like the way Larkin Poe does it too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UgKRgb6nOis

I had never heard of Ram Jam until I listened to the video above, but they're pretty good too.
