I was browsing the Stewart-MacDonald site, and saw their fret calculator. How in the world can someone measure a distance of 2.546mm or 8.873mm? Even measuring 8.8mm would seem to be out of the question.

Ah, yes. I'm glad I'm not in the business of making fretboards.

It's not just a matter of measuring a very fine, precise distance - you then have to cut a slot in exactly the right place. Try it, it's great fun!

When I do it (rarely, nowadays) I just kid myself that I can measure and cut, by eye, to a quarter of a millimetre, and the result is always good enough for my purposes.

So 2.546mm is 0.100236 inches.

Does precision beyond 1/1000" really matter? The kerf of your saw blade will be wider than that.

I can't imagine .001 making a difference in the sound of a ukulele. The idea is to have the fret centered at that point, so the width of the blade/fret doesn't matter.
