Gotaukulele's Highest Rating for "Sound"

Take it all in stride. The great problem is the dearth of music stores selling ukes of good quality. Plenty of music stores will stock a cheap uke or perhaps two. But the good stuff? Gotta trust a long-distance store, and you can only hope it works. . . or you'll lump the cost of the shipment back.

I'm old school, like to inspect merchandise like ukes that I intend to keep 20 years or more. I'm not a gear spinner.

I dislike the current situation where there are only a few decent retailers since I'm not keen on having only one or two options.

I agree wth you in part but not fully - yes I always suggest to my readers that buying in person is preferable - but for many that is simply not possible to do in what I call a 'specialist' ukulele store - whether through sheer distance, disablity, cost of travel options etc. It may also surprise you that when it comes to my own personal ukuleles - I have NEVER bought one in person - all have been online purchases one way or the other.

Yes, i'd like to see more GOOD retailers too though - but bear in mind, those that do exist have to work REALLY hard to make them work. I don't think there is is enough demand out there for there to be large numbers of uke specialists. I think there's probably diminishing demand for large numbers of musical instrument stores full stop. Very sad...

Oh, there's probably a 'Gotsomespeakers' site for that :D

I’m not trying to stoke the fire, I attribute my most expensive ukulele purchases to being swayed into completion by Baz. He’s charismatic and easily trusted... And obviously very genuine. His Uke passion is evident. He’s a valuable part of our world... but this was f&&king funny. Good night.

Ps, don’t trust my sig, I’ve been downsizing...

Thanks for your time Baz, you are awesome bro.

Imagine the cost of stocking a variety of top quality ukuleles. Add up the cost of half a dozen each of KoAloha, Kanile'a, Kamaka, Kiwaya, Martin, Blackbird, Romero, Flea, and Fluke, to name just a few. There are too many brands, sizes, materials, and appearance options for any store to stock a good selection. Online shopping shows you virtually everything that's available anywhere. If I don't like the appearance of a uke in CA, I can choose a similar one in WI.

I visited some uke stores when I was in Hawaii, but I didn't know anything about ukes at the time, so I can't comment on the selection.

This is true - plus, the likes of Kamaka, Kanile'a, Koaloha, Martin etc are VERY picky about who they allow to sell their instruments (to keep quality of service up, but, of course, because their volumes are not actually that huge). It was only 'relatively' recently for example that dealers in the UK could get hold of Kamaka ukes easily.

Over here there are four or five stores that I consider to be true uke specialists. They don't all stock the same things of course, though there is some overlap. But it's better than them not existing and me only having the choice of the big high street sellers with racks and racks of Fenders, Luna's and whatnot.

My sister lives near Bournemouth. I'll be visiting her in the Spring. Only about ten miles from SUS. I must try to resist the temptation. I'd be like a kid in a candy store!

My name is John Colter, and I am a uke-aholic.

It appears that Guitar Center is a dealer for new Kanilea ukes. That was a surprise, if Kanilea is indeed picky about who can sell their new instruments.

I am surprised that GC would accept such a supposed low volume producer. Maybe the good relationship with Taylor got them a foot in the door. Now stock has changed to 23 ... that is some great exposure.

Such a happy ukulele community...

Coming to learn that this is just a byproduct of online message boards in general, not just UU. They are poison!

I rarely post these days as when I do I usually get involved to the point where I lose all remaining faith in humanity. I just wish people could base their beliefs (which they so willingly shove down others throats on the internet) on logic and fact. With anonymity however, any troll/ignorant shmuck can post whatever they want for non-logical reasons without any repercussion. Ugh! I’m irritated just thinking about it, gonna go play my uke! \m/

Before I bought a ukulele I had messed around on a friends selection of instruments and got a surprise at the versitily of them. Having played acoustic guitar and banjo for a good many years I thought I knew it all,how wrong I was. I discovered Barry's site early on in my hunt for my own instrument and found his review procedure and remarks most helpful. Not the only site out there but one always looking at when researching for a new instrument or other ukulele information in my opinion.
