Season 409: The Virtual Ukulele Club

Hello, Geoff ... great idea for the week! I have never had the luxury of playing in a uke group ... I doubt very much whether there are any within a radius of less than 100 kilometres from here. I looked at various group songbooks online and was particularly attracted to the Taunton Strummers' book; whoever compiled it had a sense of humour. Anyway, this song featured in it, and, probably, in many other club songbooks as well. I put up the lyrics and chords in case anyone feels like strumming along.

I don't belong to any uke groups either but if I did I would hope a Who song would be in their repertoire. This is probably my favourite song of theirs, I've missed the bridge out because whilst it's great fun to play it's a pain in the proverbial to sing (for me at any rate).

Hi

Long time! Simple recording nothing fancy. This song is not part of our usual NJ music circle. Hope all is well with everyone.

Ciao

Here is a song I introduced to the uke group I was a member of a while ago. I led the group once while the leader was away and got to keep the night's takings. I can tell you there is money to be made....

A simple and lovely warm up song we do each time we gather.

I’ll try to post a different song (playing a different uke) each day.

Today: The Ohana SK 28 (Nunes inspired).

For me trying to belt out one of my favorite songs from when I was a kid to a sleeping dog...

It’s like the old Choose your own Adventure books!

For Season 423 of the Ukulele, we're playing music of our ukulele "clubs". I lead several strum song circle type gatherings at the studio, but one of the ukulele gatherings I lead is the Artichoke Ukulele Orchestra (Ukestra); this is my five part arrangement of Henry Mancini's Pink Panther Theme which the Ukestra plays. Two tracks of concert ukulele, one track each of tenor, baritone, and Ubass.

Glasgow in the 60's... folk club scene, the Incredible String Band were a trio... with the addition of Clive Palmer, then they went to a duo with just Robin and Mike, before becoming a quartet with the addition of Rose and Liquorice. This was a song we sung way back then. It was only later I discovered that Mike Heron had borrowed rather heavily from Rev. Gary Davis's song "Oh Lord how happy I am" With men in times of trouble it is always whisky to the rescue... at least as a short term solution.

Most Tuesday nights (until this problem kicked off) I go to the Minster Ukes in York. About a dozen people in the back room of a pub, a complete mix of abilities, and a songbook which has gradually grown to well over 100. If any Seasonistas are ever in or around York, you would be very welcome.
This one gets asked for most weeks.

I was checking out what <TCK> posted and I think I just saw RedPaul getting slapped with a paternity suit.....

Eric and Ernie to the rescue. The thing that learnt from Eric was catching the invisible ball in a paper bag. I have used it to amuse my grandchildren when they were young. it always used to amaze them. I would get them to throw a weightless invisible ball 8n to the air and I would catch it with a thump in the paper bag. it was all done with a snap of the fingers.... oh what fun we had.

Nice idea Geoff.
I help lead the Tulsa Ukulele Club. We mainly use the two Daily Ukulele Songbooks. But we have some supplemental material like our Hawaiian Performance book.

We meet weekly for two hours.
Week one we meet in the lobby of a cancer hospital and jam out some songs for the residents.
Week two we have our own little open mic for individuals to shine at a nice Pizza place. If that runs short, usually does, we jam.
The rest of the month our meetings are jam/rehearsals in the back room of a nursing home who's residents are welcome to sit in an listen. It could be just jamming or it could be rehearsing for an upcoming gig. Gigs can be nursing homes or even casinos.

I have seen several different formats that ukulele groups use for their meetings. Our approach is to try and hit a happy medium between those who like to jam and those who like to perform. We apparently have more interested in the performing aspect for that's when our attendance is the highest.

During this break our homework is to dig into the Daily Ukulele Songbooks and start playing the songs we haven't played much or at all so when we start meeting again we will have more songs to pick from. So option #2 falls right in line for me.

Yukio played a fantastic free spirited jailhouse Rock.
i just wanted to get in on the act as this is a virtual uke club....one of the things that i tried to do with our old club was not be ALL ukes ...ALL the time..so that went down like a Led Zeppelin .....but I slung some Jo Anna in under and around....hope the mix is okay...say if not. Cheers fellow Bug Beaters.

This one is a little goofy. I was doing research into a song I wanted to do for this season, The Bear Necessities. In the process of my research, I made this video about metronomes using my Seasons song as an example. I was going to do a second version of The Bear Necessities for this forum, but I don't think I should try to beat the one that came out off-the-cuff in the metronome video. So, I am placing it here. I hope that is okay, I sorta mention the forum (though not by name.)

Every uke jam needs a few Buddy Holly songs. I brought this one a few years back. With the group we have a kazoo or harmonica break, but I didn't bring out the old rack. Played on my Flea koa soprano.

Here's a fun song; old folks remember it and young folks who haven't heard it before, like it. My grandpa used to like it, too.

I used to belong to a 15 member ukulele band (we've paired down to about six these days. More on that later..). We did a show on Cinco de Mayo and called it Uke-o de Mayo. I know. We opened with this song. Haven't played it in years.
Cheers
