Grew up in Maui all my life. I own a Mele Tenor. My journey began when I was about 5 or 6. My Makuakane played ki ho'alu so never really had an ukulele. I remember when he first bought a Maui Music Soprano from Bounty Music which my Makuakane still owns. Attended ukulele class in 6th grade at Lokelani Intermediate and Iao Intermediate. Black strings were all the rage. All the ukuleles in class were cheap but there was only one that had black strings which we would all race to get. It had "Duke Kahanamoku" across the front. Surf, Wipeout, Tiny Bubbles, Maui Supah Man, Drop Baby, and Kawika were some of the first songs I learned. Ive been to the Mele Ukulele store many times. Its right up the road from Baldwin High School where I attended my jr year. Have frequently visited pulling ukuleles from hangers to jam some of my favorite songs. Maui No Ka Oi. Aloha to all.
