Season 432 - Solitude

There is also the Scottish Small Pipes. Much smaller and quieter than the Great Highland Pipe (which is also played by the Irish, btw). They did fall out of regular use at one point and have been revived in more recent times.

Kathryn Tickell had a Gallician Piper as a guest at a concert I was at some years ago and you're right, they're seriously loud. Some regions of France have traditional pipes which are pretty loud.

Over the years we have visited Northumberland, in the UK, at least once a year and have often been lucky enough to hear the Northumberian pipes played in small concerts or local pubs, such a beautiful sound that matches the coast and countryside of that part of the country, well worth a listen. Unfortunately we also came across the worst playing of the Highland pipes I have ever heard with a guy busking on the track to the castle on Lindisfarne island. That was guaranteed to give the big pipes the bad name people associate with them The Solitude season has been great thanks to all.
