Also, the grain on yours looks pretty different from mine... I wonder if they are made from the same laminated woods.

They probably have different specs/come out from different factories.
 
The uke was HPL, wasn't it? That means it's not actually made out of wood. HPL is basically layers of pressed resin and similar to what, for example, kitchen countertops are made out of. The "woodgrain" on the top is just a print so it can look like basically anything. No wonder if there's some variation.
 
Mine replicates the appearance of sapele - very convincingly.

You're right, for some reason I thought it was laminated mahogany all around.
Taken from its store page (although this is for the 15 frets, the 12 frets might be a completely different uke FWIW):

Top, sides and back: HPL mahogany
Neck: solid mahogany
Nut and saddle: ox bone (?)
Fretboard: Richlite (ps.: I don't really like it much)
