Starting out: documentation thread

I got my plans scanned, and with the help from a coworker, traced the contour and sound hole center in Rhino. I brought that into Aspire and ran off a 1/4” MDF template.
I can now use the Aspire file to generate forms for the Fox side bender.

The plans provide for either a Spanish heel or dovetail neck attachment. While I’d like to try the Spanish heel at some point, I think I’ll go with the dovetail on the first one. The back represented on the plans has the flat area for neck mounting, so this is the one we used for tracing.

A couple of questions:

Since the file is of the outside contour, should I offset the forms for the side bender by a couple of millimeters to account for material thickness?

Also, should I modify in anyway to account for springback?

I decided to go ahead and make a cutaway profile while I was at it.

I was getting bogged down with the engineering involved in building the Fox side bender, so after looking around the web, I opted for a simpler design.
It is 6 1/2" wide, so I'll be ordering a 6" x 24" blanket.

We have ways of making you talk...

I just spent the last half hour perusing your photo stream. Really interesting stuff.

Thanks. Having access to a CNC is really convenient.

Main part of the body mould is together.
It is made up of layers of 1/2" (12mm) Baltic birch ply, for a total thickness of just under 2 7/8".
Layers are not glued so height of mould is adjustable.

Up next is making the waist spreader cauls, and cauls for the upper and lower bouts.

I have a question about glue and gluing. When I glue wood together with Titebond or something similar, I always get a certain amount of squeeze-out. From what I understand, that's the way to do it - equal squeeze-out all along the joint. That creates a problem with staining, though. If I wipe away the excess glue, the section of wood that's been wiped will look different after it it stained.

The solution?
