Hi,
I haven't played my soprano in a long time so I put on
Aquila 30U GDAE strings and have been playing it daily. I really love the fifths tuning because violin is my main instrument. However I have noticed that the intonation is off quite a bit. I tuned it so that the open strings are perfectly in tune. Here is an example:
The worst is the A string:
Note = +/- cents
A = 0
B = +4
C = +5
C# = +8
D = +8
E = +10
The open D is near 0 but the other ones on this string are on average +5 cents.
The notes on the G string are on average +2 or +3 cents.
And the E string is on average +3.
To my (bad) ears, GD & E are acceptable. But the A string being +8 cents sounds off.
Is this normal? I know I'm pushing the limits with the fifths tuning on a soprano uke. My strings are not new, I've had them on this uke and changed them with the normal Aquila strings several times now. I don't know if it's a problem with the strings or the uke. My uke is a Flea soprano.
I really enjoy playing GDAE with nylon strings at a low budget.
