Hi Everyone,

I have decided to pick up a musical instrument, most likely a ukulele. I want to expand my music knowledge and ability, and find the right instrument. I believe now is a great time to learn and grow with music in some form to play for myself or for others. I greatly appreciate any help I receive!

Thanks

Hi Red720,

Yes now is a great time to learn to play a musical instrument. And of course, this being an ukulele themed site, I'll suggest the ukulele is an excellent choice. It's an easy instrument to begin to learn on. You can start playing easy songs with a basic strum and only one or two chords. But like all things, it takes a lot of work to become proficient.

A great place to start is with Barry Maz's website: gotaukulele.com
It is aimed at beginners and has information, tips, ukulele reviews and an occasional opinion rant. His reviews are very well regarded.

A couple of UU Member sites are also worthwhile:

Welcome to UU, Red 720!
The ukulele is a great choice:
it's very portable (especially the soprano and concert size, smaller might be challenging to play, more expensive, and the sound might not be as appealing);
it's fairly cheap;
you can play melody lines if you prefer or as you advance;
you can play and learn about chords;
you can make people smile;
many people find it easier than the guitar (I don't play guitar, so I can't compare);
there is enough free material available on YouTube and elsewhere on the internet to get you started and up to immediate or even advanced level;
there is an active community with a lot of aloha spirit here on UU, and we're here to help each other.

So, check out the reviews of the ukuleles in your price range on Barry's gotaukulele.com and Choirguy (Chris) ukestuff.info. Select a few models, contact a reputable dealer (a specialist shop) and decide which one to order. Then you can start with Uncle Rod's bootcamp and YouTube tutorials.

ANY time is a great time to start! Best wishes on your decision,you will never regret it.And you will find all the help you need online, either on this forum or watching tutorial videos on YouTube or elsewhere. Enjoy your adventure!

Thanks for the quick replies, help, and encouragement out of the gate!

I will post the rest of the questions in the beginner's forum.
