I had never heard of a Mandore before. It's kind of in the range of a sopranino ukulele, isn't it?

The mandore is (one of) the forerunners of the mandolin. It was popular during the renaissance, especially in France. You can see more info here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mandore_(instrument) . The customer wanted this to be extra small, with a scale length of only 28cm, so yes it is in sopranino size but it has a wider range because the 5 strings are tuned non-reentrant (unlike a uke) adada. My mandores are usually 35cm scale length.
