That's a good idea, here's a mockup.
I'm going to enlarge that, print it, cut out the tailpiece, and attach it to the uke.
I actually have a small chrome tailpiece I could use. I just realized that the strings will be too short. Well, they do stretch over time, don't they? I'll tighten them up and wait six months.

I've decided to go the tailpiece route. I have a small chrome, but I think I'll make one out of wood.

That looks great!
Try putting a thin strip of felt (Dollar store craft aisle) around the perimeter of your body under the plate. Could be a 1/4" wide or so. On some resonator guitars they use felt under the resonator cone to dampen unwanted vibrations. In your case the plate is the resonator. Coukd be a quick fix for ya.
