Just wondering if adding some graphite to the nut as string lube will have any effect?

Thanks

A very tiny amount will suffice. Too much and it can coat string and get on hands. Oh wait! That was NutSauce...

If you think your strings are hanging up on the nut, by all means. A little graphite can help. Or, you can smooth the edges of the slot using a folded piece of brown paper bag. There are tiny amounts of grit in the paper. It works great for smoothing a small burr or flashing.

Uke strings are typically very soft materials. If your nut slots are either sharp enough or undersized enough that the string is hanging up, the nut really needs to be fixed. Slots the correct size, and edges eased so they're not sharp. Graphite dust can help lubricate things, and is common on stringed instruments in general, but it can also hide a problem and in the long run you end up with damaged strings. I've worked on ukes where the strings were stained with graphite dust and also visibly cut or "shaved" - sometimes to the extent that little nylon shavings are literally hanging off the string right at the nut.
