Hi Everyone
I am quite new to ukulele playing but been playing guitar for 35 years, I got a Kala cara bur tenor a few weeks ago and have fallen in love...... But I'm looking at upgrading and need some advice. Expect some very amateurish questions . I am looking in the region of Flight Mustang, Pono ATD, Millar TA 260G, Martin T1k. In the absence of being able to go and play one in a shop I'mwatching videos on YouTube to try and make a decision, alongside this I need some reliable and sound advice on what to do. I have an extreme case of UAS that won't pass until I've done the deed. I'm not bothered about a pick up, I play at home for my own enjoyment but like to make a nice sound, don't like the Aquila strings much, I like the high g tuning (keep it traditional). Replies much appreciated in advance 👍🏻

Hi Big Mick, welcome to the UU Forum. We're always happy to offer lots of advice. ;)

You will find proponents here for most of the models you have mentioned. I'm guessing in the $500 - $600 USD range. (370 to 440 pounds.)

I have a 2017 Pono ATD and it's a lovely instrument. (Though you have to be careful with the quality regarding the neck.) I have Living Waters strings on mine. Which produces a chimey bell-like sound. I also like the Pono mango MGT. With the satin finish. A little warmer sound.

Buy from a dealer who includes a setup with the purchase. Adjusting the string height, making sure the frets are level and the intonation is right will make a profound difference in the way it plays and sounds. But then you know that from your guitar experience.

Have fun in your search.

Welcome Big Mick!

I keep hearing that the Millar's punch way above their price point.

Since you're in the UK, I'd call Alex at the Southern Ukulele store to have a chat about the differences among these models. He can help guide you to a uke that's right for you. There's no substitute for real conversation with someone who is so familiar with each model.

Cheers, Bluesy.
