About the narrow nut width of Martin tenor ukuleles

Some might think Martin's narrow nut is not that big of a deal

But just imagine what's gonna happen if Koaloha and Kamaka decide to change their tenors' nut width from 38mm to 34mm

I bet it will be more than just a big deal

The forum will be on fire

I'm not saying 34mm nut is impossible to play

My point is why 34mm? why not 35mm, 36mm or 38mm?

With Martin's string spacing the 1st and 4th strings will be extremely close to the edge of the fingerboard

I just can't understand the reason behind the 34mm super narrow nut

Neither Koaloha, nor Kamaka (or any other ukulele maker on this planet) are going to alter their hundreds of years of traditional instrument manufacture, to go after Martin's 1% of the ukulele market, and certainly not by trying to emulate the nut width of one model of that 1%. Martin is safe from "ruin" and the ukulele world is safe from Martin's ukulele with a 34mm nut.

I wonder if they used the neck measurements from a tenor guitar. Or thought they might be marketing to tenor guitar players.

I think there must be a market for both a wider and a narrower neck. They sort of have both covered. If I wanted a narrow neck, I wouldn’t buy a Kanilea. I don’t see Kanilea customers writing to Kanilea about that, although they’d have a lot better chance of effecting change.
