Hey guys,

I am fairly new here. I am still learning my first chords and strumming patterns.

I have just watched this video and the 5 strumming patterns.
https://youtu.be/gAScCO3Mb-w

I know he has new videos that are less "painly"...I mean this video is slow as eff, but it is perfect for a newbie like me. :)

So, the patterns are:

1, down, down, down, down (01:31)
2,down up, down up, down up, down up (02:58)
3, down, down up, down, down up (04:22)
4, down up, down, down up, down (05:22)
5, down, down up, up, down up (06:37) - calypso

I understand that these patterns are there for us to experiment with, but can anyone recommend songs that are popular (so that I'd have an anchor point/comparison to work with) and recommend which strumming patterns they sound good with (I am darn sure that some might be used with more than one pattern too).

I am really into jazz, crooners' songs...but as a newbie those might be too much to start with. So, simple thing will do too.

Thank you very much.

UPDATE: Well, I have just fallen in love with this song/video (https://youtu.be/jR7FAlyJvJc)
This song doesn't follow any of the above mentioned strumming patterns, but it feels like it is doable. I used to sing it in the office to annoy my Italian colleague (who hates it for some reason :biglaugh: )

Call me a rebel, or just plain not a good player, but I don't try to memorize strum patterns. I strum what feels right for what I'm playing based on either what I know it should sound like, or what I think I want it to sound like. "Just play".

As you did, find a song that speaks to you, and just play it.

I think this was the first song I learned to play just because I like the song and it's 5 fairly easy chords:

And this one was right in there with the early songs I learned. Only 4 chords. The E7 can be a tangle until you get used to it, but it's not bad. Basic 12-bar blues. You can "embellish", or you can play it very simply. Fast or slow.

This one I've been learning more recently, and find it really fun to play:

You'll probably like that one, but it has a bunch more chords including the possibly challenging E7, and maybe Fm.

Since you're just starting out, you might find this handy:

I didn't find it until just a few months ago (I've been "playing" for close to 10 years), but it's a good beginner guide. I don't agree with him that you shouldn't learn songs, though. Go ahead and do what you're doing, learn some simple songs so that you feel like you're doing something! But, the "bootcamp" document is good... and the "self-exam" document is even better when you're ready for it. I've been goofing off long enough that I actually did pretty darned well on the self-exam, and apparently qualify as an "intermediate" player.

I recommend practicing these strumming patterns while playing just a C chord.
Strumming is all about practicing a pattern to the point where it comes second nature and you don’t have to think about it too much.

It's not quite the right strumming pattern, but I've been practicing Calypso pattern to the chords from Rip Tide - Am, G, C, C - and it has a nice sound.

A little late, but here goes,
Shuffle strum
down, down, up, pause
Flip, flop and fly, 1955, Joe Turner, 12 bar with a quick turnaround on the IV

When I get the blues gonna get me a rocking chair
When I get the blues gonna get me a rocking chair
When the blues overtake me going to rock right away from here
