I play clawhammer on a banjo and want to give the ukulele a try. I have a tenor ukulele. I'd like to know how ukuleles are tuned to play clawhammer, and what kind of strings to use.

My thought is that I might like to tune it like string 1,2,3,5 of the banjo, or string 1,2,3,4 of the banjo with the fourth an octave higher. It might or might not be in the key of the banjo, but that is OK. I usually play the banjo in open G (gDGBD), but could just as easily tune to open C.

Tuning would be standard ukulele tuning. No need to change it at all. No 'special' strings either.

I have used standard Uke tuning, and a bunch of others for clawhammer.
gCEA
eAEA
cCGD
are my favorites. I have a beater baritone that use for playing with tunings...

A lot of the really old stroke style banjo stuff was written for a 4 string banjo so it can work easily on the Uke.

I use standard C6 re-entrant (gCEA) most often, but sometimes use open C re-entrant (gCEG). This puts the 1st and 4th strings in unison, but lets me transfer licks from the banjer.
I have linear (low G) tuned ukes, but don't use them for clawhammer.
