Outdoor or flea which will I play more?

Agreeed. I also have four kids so I like the idea of an indestructible SUV uke so that they can get familiar with it on long trips. We don’t have those fancy DVD things in our cars and hopefully never will.

I myself have a Flea. I have it tuned to Baritone DGBE. The fact that you can use a Phillips head screwdriver to lock in the tuners is a great feature. Not familiar with the outdoor specific built ukuleles, but I do know the Flea has a flat bottom so no stand is needed.

Err... I don't mean to be rude or anything but why would you tighten the tuners so tight that they lock in place?

I'd say more people think the friction tuners are the weak link of fleas and flukes; that includes the headstock design that makes replacement with geared tuners less than easy.

A number of people have swapped out the tuners for geared or UPT.

Personally, I am fine with friction pegs, but that is an option as well as the Pegheds

there's a gigantic thread on swapping tuners on fleas/flukes... in most cases some mod was required, reaming the holes or altering the tuner base plates. do-able for sure, but not an easy drop-in replacement. and then there is the esthetics/cosmetics/look/whatever to consider...

If you're buying tuners, you can usually find the specs. If you select tuners that will fit into the stock holes, you don't have to enlarge them. That's what happened with my last swap. The replacements fit right into the holes.

Jerry, can you provide details on those drop-ins?

I took them out of my box of tuners. They're the type that have two screws, one top and one bottom. I had to trim the bottom of one so it would fit above the bottom tuner. I also had to trim them a bit because they were wider than the wood of the headstock. The shaft must be fairly long because the legs of the headstock are fairly wide. The first set I used wasn't very long, so I found a set with longer shafts. You want to have enough shaft to roll up the string.

so you had to alter the tuner baseplates?

Based on the freakish amount of humidity this summer ( unheard of in Colorado ) and the power chords,“ ghost “ chords, and modified chords I play it helps. They are not completely locked in, but they don’t flop like they would if they didn’t have the tension.

I have both and play the flea more. I think it sounds better. I got the outdoor for backpacking but I had major vascular surgery on my leg so now I cannot do that. I guess I shouls sell the Outdoor.

Lol. Ukuleles the beautiful distraction to that.

You can always keep the outdoor one to test out alternative tunings. I have the Flea tuned to baritone, gives it a unique flavor. Otherwise it would be right between tenor and baritone with island tuning.
