I remember that recently it was mentioned that somebody had tried to enter a post, but everything was deleted after a dollar sign or something similar. This happened to me yesterday after I had written the price of an item mentioned in the thread.
I can't remember whether anyone came up with a reason or solution. Does anyone else know? Thanks Mike

My recollection was the same... at least I thought it was limited to some sort of "special characters" ...

However, I used an apostrophe in the name Kanile(apostrophe)a .. and the "a" was dropped in the title (in Marketplace) as well as everything in the classified AFTER the first word !!

Fortunately I had typed up the lengthy description in the notes section of the OS and was able to repost in a new posting. Because I couldn't delete the original post, a good number of UU'ers were directed to an empty post with my name attached.

Sure would like the ability to delete my own "new" threads when these errors occur...

I'd be interested to know if there are other 'special characters' that cause the truncations.

I have had posts deleted after the apostrophe and had to re enter with "the ukulele belonging to my brother," replacing "my brother's uke." Same meaning, but sounds very awkward.

This problem may have to do with the way your computer is set to post to the internet. You usually have three options that can be found in your browser set-up. You can post in plain text only, post in HTML only or post using both. I have mine set to both. The most common problem is when the setting is "HTML only". Check your settings. But the bottom line is that the UU Forum may have problems in the way posts are processed and posted. There is definitely something rotten in Denmark. And why do we pick on Denmark? Over and out.

I just had the problem today in a PM, cut off at an apostrophe, and I use Safari in Big Sur on a Mac Mini. I am being very careful now not to use them. Here are settings in Safari Preferences, Unicode is a new standard that I am sure vBulletin does not support. I may try Mac OS Roman.

Thanks everyone, I'm using the Chrome browser on Windows 10. I'll have a look through the settings later, although I'm not quite sure where to start!. Regards Mike

It is so frustrating, is it not?! I have never come across a forum like it.

It looks like it is a fairly well-documented problem:-

https://forum.vbulletin.com/forum/v...n-characters-causes-forum-posts-to-be-cut-off

It looks like it's a bug in old versions of vBulletin and an update would fix it.

If the forum can't be updated then it seems like it can be resolved by setting the forum's 'HTML Character Set' to utf-8

Thanks , where do I find this? I've looked around in settings but without success. Mike

Well I still don't know how to check the character set(or change it), after hours of searching around, and now I'm losing the will to live! Can someone please enlighten me?
Mike

I lost 2 posts that I used apostrophes. I use an iPhone and can not fix it in settings. I will just post without the apostrophe. Not an issue for me. At least until I find it more than a punctuation problem. :)

Sorry - I should have been clearer. It's something (fairly easy by the look of things) that the people running the forum need to change at their end (if they don't want to upgrade the very old version of vBulletin the forum appears to be running on). Nothing us users can do.

Well that failed in my last post when I entered the British pound symbol . It and everything thereafter were deleted. Looks like I'll have to live with it. Cheers Mike.

Turn off Settings.General.Keyboards.Smart Punctuation.

As a quick reference, anything in the standard character set range (32-127) should work fine. Anything else is at risk. GBP, Euro symbols, and accented characters are above 127

Thanks, I will try that
