Left or right handed?

I am left handed, but play guitar and uke right handed. When I first picked up a guitar, it immediately seemed that the more difficult task was trying to form a chord, not strumming across the strings with a pick. So WHY would you use your dominate hand for the less demanding task? I've never understood this about guitar, as it seems all the right handed players are doing it backward, and are at a disadvantage.
