Does anyone use their thumb for the C string? I just can't get all my fingers jammed on the fret board for an C7 alt cord that requires both the pinky and ring finger on the 10th fret. It seems a whole lot easier is I let my thumb cover the top string. Is this a bad habit? Perfectly acceptable?

If it works for you then use it.

Have you ever watched Hendrix play?

Do you mean the top string as in the G string? Robbocx has a point but it's not a habit I would get into. A lot of chord shapes are difficult to get right at first but with practice they become easy. I'd stick with it and try and get the shape right then once you can do that it's fair enough to go all Hendrix on it.
