Hi everyone! I'm new here and to the uke. I've been playing for a few weeks, and I like it very much. Thing is I've never really listened much to anyone who plays uke. Feel free to name drop som artists so I can expand my listening experience
If I had to pick my two favorite players I'd say the late John King, and the still very alive and gigging Herb Ohta, Sr. They couldn't be more different from each other - so I think these two are great proof of the ukulele's versatility as an instrument.
I second the recommendations on Jake, Iz, Aldrine and John King. If you're for ukulele soloist with records, I would add virtuoso James Hill (http://www.ukulelejames.com/), jazz wonder Abe Lagrimas Jr. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKpk9SO7iLM), Grammy-winner Daniel Ho, his sometimes collaborator Herb Ohta Jr., and former kid-prodigies Brittni Paiva (www.brittnipaiva.com) and Taimane Gardner (taimane.com).
Wow! I've been looking at the uke as sort of a simple and fun instrument to use for chording and playing rhythm. I've sort of had it in my mind to switch to a guitar eventually, but after having seen Aldrine my mind has changed! The uke has some serious potential for expression!
I will be checking out the rest of the artists too. Thank you all so much for all this information!
