routine maintenance for open geared tuners?

Last month I happily became the owner of a new Mainland mahogany concert that has a slotted headstock and open geared tuners. The tuners are, of course, working fine right now but it occurs to me that dust and grime could eventually take a toll on the exposed gears. Any suggestions on keeping them in good condition?

I have a few instruments with open geared tuning machines and grime really isn't an issue. However, I do put a drop or two of Tri-Flow oil on the gears about once a year to keep them moving properly.

I have used this stuff for decades. Works great on drum pedals which are the worst to lube as if it drips you get it on someone's carpet, sealed tuners because it seeps through into the inside. Open tuners because a very small amount works just fine. I even use it in the nut slots. Radio Shack is the only place I've found it, it's cheap and lasts forever!

Oil generally clogs and hardens into gunky residue
over time.If your tuners are brass on steel then they
should be 'self lubricating'. If not a very small puff
of graphite dust does the job,ask any locksmith!
