I'm thinking of getting an ukulele for more strumming than finger picking. Would a 6 string ukulele be the way to go?

And also, is the Lanikai LU6 any good?
Can someone link me to some reviews of it if there are some? I can't seem to find them on google.

I don't want to spend a lot on this though because I mainly finger pick more than I strum so I'll only be getting a pure acoustic model, probably around the 200 - 400 dollar range only.

You can pick with a six string, but it's harder due to the doubled up strings. Strumming a six string is pretty cool and you can decide for yourself which strings to double up and whether or not to use the same or octave-different tuning. On my LU6 I have the C string an octave apart and the A string as a plain double. Find one in a store or go to a uke fest and try one out before buying. If it works for you, great.

Some songs sound better with a six string uke in much the same way a soprano vs tenor makes a song come alive.

I have an LU-6 and it sounds pretty good, I think for the price they are hard to beat. Mine is strung with octave C's and A's and I really like the sound strummed, but I do a lot of picking and arpeggiated chords and the low A just sounds wierd to me. I find I play my 8 string a lot more than the 6. I guess I need to try it with unison A's to see if I like it better.

It's quite hard to find expensive ukuleles in Sydney, well atleast in the music stores I've been to. It's especially hard to find a 6/8 string because not many people like to play more than 4 strings, especially when it comes to teenagers.

no worries.

Let us know when you hunt something down!

I'll probably go for the Lanikai Lu6, don't want anything too expensive since I'm just testing the waters for now.

I like my 6 string for fingerpicking, especially since I changed the strings. I have it tuned gCcEAA, so the low c is first and the a is doubled. It sounds good with a low g, but I have discovered that I really prefer re-entrant. You have to get a six string, they sound really cool.
