Hi, i know you guys answer these types of Q's all the time but i would really appriciate it if you answer one more. im really eager to learn the ukulele and have come down to either an Oscar Shmidt OU5 (concert size) or perhaps a Kala Mahogony Tenor. the Kala i would have to order online and would prolly cost more.

However my real concern is that i know what i want to play but i dont know what the best tool for the job is. i really admire the uke songs that Eddie Vedder plays and those are most likely the songs i would try to learn first but i dont know what type of uke that requires to get that sound. i also want to learn some of my favorite songs and do uke covers of them. i dont have much background in any instument so transfering knowledge from for example a guitar is not an issue..please help i live in canada and its gettin cold fast i need to get a uke to stay warm.

hey man!

stuck on two different ukes yeah? haha buy em BOTH! ahha jk jk well maybe not

but yeah check it out.!
Generally with the tenor you get more fuller sound compared to a concert.
the kala mahogany tenor is a nice sounding ukulele! check it out on youtube. and mgm (musicguymike) from ebay sells a lot of mahogany tenor ukuleles for really great prices. includes case and etc.!

oh and one more thing look for solid mahogany. some are laminate on mgm's ebay store he sells a couple solid ones for under 200 i believe.

here is a pono mahogany tenor: nice sounding. 300$

here is the kala solid mahogany:219$

hope this helped yah

Thanks Brah!!!

thanks for the quick reply, the solid mahogany does sound like the way to go but it is definetly more expensive (being broke sucks), does this mean the Oscar Shmidt ou5 concert uke is no good?

can someone tell me what kind of Uke is being played here in these clips or if they are different what each of them are, i dont think my ear is as good as a lot of the people on UU ahahah.

these are some of the songs i want to learn and as you can prolly see from above dont have much cash so i want to be sure whatever i spend the money on can get the job done. Thanks.

You mentioned Eddie Vedder and I immediately thought of the Tululele I purchased a couple weeks ago.

Eddie Vedder plays a custom Tenor Tululele from Earnest instruments

Heres a vid of him playing on one.

as far as purchasing one your choices are pretty good. I have a O/S OU2 that I got as a gift it actually gave me a start. Have you looked at your local music stores yet? Most definitely toronto will have more variety than Winnipeg!! I'm currently selling the OU2 locally but if your interested PM.

honestly just go with the solid mahogany tenor kala!
the link above me if for a laminate its 139.
the link i sent you is solid mahogany tenor for 219. thats not to much of a difference the sound difference is very noticeable.

thanks for the feedback, i really do want the solid mahogany kala. i live in toronto canada and 219+50 for shipping, puts it just under 300, thats quite a big difference from going to a close store and paying 120 for the o/s ou5 concert. since this is my first uke tho and all i hear is good things about the Kala i might just go for it.

especially because i think the tenor is the sound im looking for, can someone verify if im right, is this the sound of a tenor? http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=z6WJfQf3exQ&feature=related

it may be tuned differently in the clip.

this is an amazing forum by the way, i would be soo lost without the help!

I personally would go with the Kala tenor. There hasn't been too many positive reviews on the OS ukes. I've played a couple and have not been impressed. If you are looking for a fuller sound, consider stringing with a low G.

Uke on its way!!!!!

Hey, i just wanted to say thanks to everyone for the help.

i spoke to MGM today for a while and went wit the Solid Mahogany Tenor. im getting it tuned low G and i know it comes wit a pitch pipe but does anyone know of any good links or ways to keep the Low G in tune? because the pitch pipe is obviously high G.

any other ways on how to get off to a good start would be appriciated aswell.

Cheers!!!!!!!!!!

I just signed up and this is my first post, cuz I just gotta know......

How did it go? Was your uke Guaranteed to give you Sleepless Nights? Longing to Belong to Society, but feeling like a Satelite with a Broken Heart Setting Forth Amongst the Waves?

I'd take Eddie Vedder. He's dreamy!

That's what I was going to say. Well, not the dreamy part, but I'd definitely take Eddie over any number of ukes, provided I get to keep the ones I already have, of course.
