THE BRITISH INVASION!

Click here for the "Official Entry" Playlist for this week!

Click here for the Bonus Track Playlist for this week!

It's 1965. Mods are riding their GS Scooters in Brighton. Rockers prowl the streets of London in leather jackets. Swingers flock to Carnaby Street for fun fashion. And from the Cavern Club to the Railway Tavern to the Marquee Club, some of the best music in history is being unleashed on the world.

Very little of it on the ukulele, of course, but this week, we're gonna fix that!

The week, we want songs from the bands of the British Invasion. For sake of argument we're going to say that consists of bands or singers from the UK who were in existence between the years of 1962 and 1970. As long as the performer was in business during this time period, it doesn't matter what year the song is from. So if you want to do a Moody Blues song from the 1980's, that's okay. Frankly, I don't know why you would do that, but you can.

Covers are fine. The Beatles covered "The Music Man." The Who covered James Brown and Mose Allison. But please limit covers to songs actually performed by British Invasion bands.

Please remember that there were a lot more bands and performers in the British Invasion than the big names everyone thinks of, including some one- and two-hit wonders that made beautiful music.

Rules:

  • The video must be a new video recorded for this contest.
  • What is it with all these rules about no multitracking? This week, MULTITRACK ALL YOU LIKE!!! Do four-part harmony with yourself! Green Screen yourself into Michelangelo Antonioni's Blow-up. Sing "To Sir With Love" to Sidney Poitier. GO NUTS!!!!!
  • The video must say at the beginning or end that it is for the 32d Season of the Ukulele. Or the middle. It's the 60's, man. Do your own thing.
  • Videos must be posted to this thread.
  • The contest ends at 8AM Greenwich Mean Time (of course!) on Monday morning October 1. For Yanks, that's 3AM EST and 12 Midnight PST (so Late Sunday Night is what I'm saying, for US folks).

Bonus Tracks: Only one entry per participant is eligible for a prize. Please feel free to submit bonus tracks! The more the merrier. I will assume that your first submission is your "official" entry, and others are bonus tracks, unless you tell me differently.

Judging:

There are three prizes, based on the following criteria:

1. The High Fidelity Award: This is for the entry that is truest to the era in terms of performance. The more it evokes the look and feel (and sounds) of the times, the better.

2. The Fab! Gear! Groovy! Award: For the most creative and entertaining performance.

3. The Lucky Bastard Award: A random drawing for one lucky bastard (or bastardess).

The Prizes:

The High Fidelity winner gets first choice of prize; the Fab! Gear! Groovy! winner gets second choice. And the Lucky Bastard gets what's left. No participant can win more than one prize. Here are the prizes:

1. A brand-new copy of Jim Beloff's "60's Uke-In: 25 Really Groovy Songs for Ukulele"

2. A selection of delicious British sweeties (photo for illustration purposes only; actual prize will depend on what I can find at Wegman's)

3. A set of Aquila strings in the size of your choice.

That's it! Have at it, groovy ukers!

Holy crap - I've been cycling through Beatles records for the last two weeks, starting with 'Please Please Me' and listening to them in chronological order. Made it through the catalogue several times now..... I know they're an obvious choice, but I keep thinking, 'that would be GREAT on the ukulele!' as I'm listening..... gonna be hard to narrow it down. The Kinks are calling, as well, and The Stones 'Aftermath'..... I think there are going to be a few bonus tracks this week.....

Eee. Technically, I've been working on two that would qualify... But I also want to pick something new. Hmmmmmm

fantastic :) so looking forward to this and by chance have been learning a song from a certain unknown band called the rolling stones, but i doubt i will do it justice as i have no idea how to multitrack lol but what the heck this is groovy baby and i am a massive Who fan, so you better do them proud guys n gals, right im off to polish my vespa and punch a few rockers (joking)

Oh...dis gonna be fun! Dang I wish I still had the old reel to reel tapes my brother gave me back in the 70's, though. He was a GI stationed in England in the 60's and a real recording nut so he had all kinds of stuff he'd recorded in small pubs and whatnot of bands that later made it big. He gave me his tapes when he switched to cassette and when I went in the military I sold off the reel-to-reel deck and all the tapes to a friend - found out later he recorded his accordian music over them (which may partially explain my deep-seated hatred of the accordian) - nah, just kidding TCK - I don't quite hate the accordian...

John

Thanks, Daveey! I felt like I couldn't encourage people to go one way or the other, but *you* certainly can-- and I bet that list is going to inspire a lot of people!

I think maybe we should have a little betting pool on the side - how many versions of "Wild Thing" do you think we're going to get this season? :)

I saw THEM in your exhaustive list Davey (super-rad...where did you source that?), but if the Irish bands are allowed, we need to include one of us. This one was number 8 in the US billboard charts, and I believe it was the first Irish single to do that. (Ian- you around to verify?)

Such a rad theme.

I swear, this is seriously helpful. Without this kinda stuff, I honestly dont think I would be able to participate in this contest lols. I have never in my 18years of living heard of such a theme and or anything with "british invasion bands" My gratitude to your helpful researching ways :p <3

I have a feeling it's gonna be Guitar Genly Weeps! There's so many tabs and tutorials out there!!

...someone had to go first

From the man who brought the world DADGAD and left us too early:

So Daveey, were you a Mod? What were your favorite clothes to wear? Was Quadrophenia true to history?

Oh, and how you will LAUGH when you look at videos of these groups! They wore SUITS when they performed! And what girls thought these guys were sexy?! THESE were the haircuts that parents were upset about? HA HA HA HA! What a crazy time!

(I was only briefly distracted by The Dave Clark Five; I was true to the Beatles, and Paul---the cute one---was my favorite.)

I just saw a video of Peter and Gordon "World Without Love" and I didn't know Austin Power sang this song!!

I think I'll be heading down to the Halloween MegaStore to see if I can find myself a new wig.

Wow that list is long. I found a very abbreviated version on wiki. I am going to attempt to multi-track using my web cam and pulling the sound track from it into audacity. This is my only choice as I have a cheap old mic (computer one that came with a PC from 1998) and maybe a adapter to plug in my uke in to the sound card. As I said, "I'm going to attempt." Oh, and I just got Adobe Premier so we'll see what that does.

Good luck all.

Your welcome and look forward to seeing your song(s) this week, loved your song for last week by the way and it is always great to have new faces join this crazy gang :)

So Daveey, were you a Mod? What were your favorite clothes to wear? Was Quadrophenia true to history?
I wish i was Ginny, unfortunately I was to young to be a mod, i wasnt even born :) although i look extremely old he he he.There was a Mod revival in the late 70's - early 80's due to the release of the film of Quadrophenia and bands like The Jam. But i was still to young (I was born on the cusp of 70/71) I am pretty certain some elements of Quadrophenia were pretty true to life, there was a lot of punch ups, especially at the seaside resorts, If i had been around i would of been a mod :) better clothes and taste in music, as they also liked reggea, soul and of course there main staple of music was Rn'B. Which these days really infuriates me (I am getting old now) as you most definitely know R n' B means Rythmn and Blues, yet this modern noise the young uns call music or let alone R n' B is not Ryhtmn and blues it is urban music, this really winds me and some of my friends up, the coprporate music business is to blame, i just wish they wouldnt call beyonce, rhianna, etc R n' B because they are NOT.
He he he rant over, calmness restored, now off to listen to some classic invasion music from the brits. :)
