WTB: Kala Pocket Uke

Have you looked at those Tom pocket ukes?
Look like a good cheap alternative. And I think they look slimmer than the kalas.
Worth a google anyway...

Just checked out a few of the video reviews on YouTube. Looks pretty good.
For a travel uke, it's nice to have something on the cheaper side (one reviewer was saying $70 shipped). Makes taking it camping, to the beach, etc less risky.

Problem is finding a place that sells them. No luck on eBay, and it looks like the major online uke stores don't carry them..

Anyone have any ideas?

ask em!

I noticed yesterday that Kala are bringing out a travel pocket! Which will make it like a 'good' version of a Tom.
Although for the money, you couldn't probably have anything better than a Tom...

Found these:

Know idea if reputable - not used them before.

A Kala traval pocket uke would be great. Think that's how they should have made them in the first place really!

Well, just ordered one from these guys.
$73 shipped to Canada.
Here's hopping it doesn't take too long and it's as good as those online reviews!

Thanks for the links!

Let us know how you get on - quite fancy one myself as cheap super-portable uke! :)

The Tom Pocket uke just arrived today.
At $73 they even through in a lot of extras. In addition to the gig bag, there was: an electric tuner, extra set of strings, 3 picks, a capo, strap, and some intro to ukulele booklets (in Chinese). Quite a bargain.

The action is set too high IMHO, and I'm having trouble tuning it in standard tuning.

I'm going to get the heavier strings that were mentioned and give it a good setup. Otherwise it looks alright.

Southcoast strings 'Heavy'. they've changed their range since I bought them.

I *think the current equivalent would be 'HMU-NW: Heavy Medium Gauge Ukulele Set - no wound string' http://www.southcoastukes.com/ukulele.htm

but probably best to email Dirk and ask him to be sure.

Point him at this video and he'll know what you mean.

:)

Just thought I'd give a quick follow up.
I've since received these recommend strings. The shipping to Canada sucks, but the strings made a huge difference.
They play in standard (GCEA) tuning very well. They also have a great tension in standard tuning and just "feel" great.
Also, the strings are long and you might be able to get two sets per package. (Cutting it close thought).
